Has anyone even done the "greyforest hood mod" on a carbon Fiber Hood, if so how did it turn out??

never heard of it, whats it look like (i may know what it is just know that thats what its called)

I havent seen it on a CF hood as of yet, i figure the hardest part of CF is going to be cutting it without webbing or cracking the surrounding hood areas.

It looks REALLY nice though, and its something i may consider in the future if i can find someone to help me :thumb:

Most people don't do the greyforest hood mod because you can buy hoods with nicer vents in them already. The greyforest mod is a cheap one that's why you use the stock hood.

Crappy cell phone pic, but here is my hood as of a few hours ago :)

I used a dremel and just took my time, not to hard but it scared the crap out of me cutting my expensive hood! (ignore the laundry basket in the back of my car ;))

Very nicely done Pandaman. Was there any splintering of the carbon fiber when you did this? did the clear coat crack at all? and how is every thing holding up?

I honestly think it is a waste of time to even do that... it looks like crap, especially with the vents where they are.

No, it actually cut like butter and I didn't have any problems with cracks of splintering at all.

Unless you have a useful function for it, other than "cools the engine" it's strictly for show!

Unless you're sitting completely still while your engine is running you don't have much to worry about when it comes to heat, and even then it's not enough to hurt anything. Too many people have stock hoods with no additional venting such as what you did and they aren't melting down their stuff.

MPO: Waste of time, money, and lame.

The purpose of my post was to show that some people have done the "greyforest hood mod" on a carbon fiber hood. Since this happens to be a subject you are obviously passionate about winning, fine, congratulations :) You can continue to voice your opinions elsewhere. I don't care enough to get into an internet arguement over my hood or your opinion on the issue.

For everyone else, my car was getting pretty hot these past few weeks with temps over 100 degrees all day and since I have done this my car has not thrown the cell I had set for a chosen temp. This has helped me some and if anyone else was considering it, I would recommend it.

Most people think that venting there hoods is to let air in...calling it useless is definitely wrong... the real purpose is to drive the hot air out while your driving...in most cases...I think it looks nice, but you cant really say it is or isn't useful or not because it's all just opinions.

That's right it's opinion... and you're now letting heat out of the engine compartment which could be caused by a problem that you won't know now because you have done something to try and "cover up" something else. Yes I know what the purpose of the vent is, but until I see a purpose for this that is something more than your LOOKS, it's going to remain useless, to me.

Import tuner has a "Fact or Fiction" section every month where they take a common theory typically about boosting HP numbers easy and try and prove it using a dyno....
Issue#116 November 2008 "Do vented hoods add more horsepower?"
They took an SR powered 180sx.....
TEST #1 (NO VENT) : 220.3 WHP avg
TEST #2 (with Vader style vented hoo) : 227.7 WHP avg

This is what they had to say "Though it didnt make as much extra power as our GT-R did sans hood, Carter's S13 picked up about 2.5 whp and 1.5 lb-ft of torque with the addition of a vented hood. Underhood temps were lowered, which allowed the SR's GT2560 turbo to pull in larger supply of cool, dense ambient air than before netting more power across the board. Even better: At highway speeds, air moving at a high velocity under the car will create an area of low pressure in its engine bay, sucking in more ambient air through the seibon hood vents that would normally flow over the non-vented stocker--further cooling the bay, improving intake air quality and making even more power. Bottom line: Let more head out, put more power down" Written by Luke Munnell and Stephen Rhim

Even just having the vent there which is basically right over the turbo... Even if it doesn't suck air out of the engine bay while driving.... Lets hot air escape after driving for lower underhood temps and quicker cool down. I'd call it pretty usefull.

:tease:

its amazing how smart some people are :aha: seems like with this guy, the light isnt even on. if your engine is gonna overheat, you will notice it, whether you have a stock hood, vented hood, or no hood at all. overheating problems in the engine are exactly that... IN THE ENGINE. no amount of vents are gonna keep your car from overheating if there's an internal problem...

oh, and panda, that $hit looks sick, nice job.

That's funny, he's getting a CEL with the stock hood but with a vented hood he doesn't? And my last post didn't make sense? Sheesh. None the less it's useless! It isn't even needed, you do it because you want to and that's all I'm saying. So what if you do want to, it's still a waste.

And there is NO hard fact from time tested and multi-tried testing that shows having a vented hood for "heat to escape" allows the car to be "quicker". Get off that.

Heat rises: fact
Vents are over a heat-generating component: fact
???
Profit.

I just posted this to show an example for the original question at the beginning of the thread.
