Carbon Fiber hood latch on hood broken

I recently got in a wreck and i needed a new hood so i bought a VIS invader carbon fiber hood used. the U hook thing on the bottom side of the hood that latches to the stock hood latch on the body is rusted and does not make a U. look at the pics for a better understanding. sorry haha. I was wondering how i should fix this? welding? i need this thing to latch down not just by the pins.

I dont know if i would weld it. I wouldnt want to burn it or weaken the area around the latch and cause it to fly open when you are driving it.

I would go with hood pins.

When you own a DSM for long enough, you become an officially recognized zip tie mechanic. Until then, enjoy not being a hack like us old guys.

Take it to a reputable welding shop. They will have the knowledge to do it right, give you peace of mind and be done with it!

Just curious, why did you buy that hood knowing it was broken in that spot?? Me personally, I would just go with hood pins.

im going to go change my major to zip tie mechanic tomorrow just so im prepared.

I'll try to take some pictures of it soon, there are three zip ties per wheel well and 5 in the hood, all of which were strategically painted where if I don't point it out no one notices.

you should be able to weld another U without overheating or frying the carbon fiber there...goodlock bro.

Hoods pins are more than sufficent to hold the hood down.

If you are trying to avoid hood pins because of the look of them you can always get a set of aerocatch pins, they sit pretty much flush with the hood. they are a bit on the expensive side unfortunatly.

Also if you are going to weld it you can take a wet rag and put it around were the U is to try and keep the heat from transfering to quickly, basically block the thermal conductivity of the remaining latch. just remember to keep the welds as short as possible without sacrificing penetration.

My old hood had those. I thought they looked terrible. besides, he said he already has hood pins installed on the hood.

But your idea about the cool wet rag would probably work wonders if he really wanted that latch on there too.

appreciate the help guys. I sawed off my U from my old hood and welded it on what was left on the CF hood. I did use a wet rag to cool it right after each weld. fit great! then put hood pins in the radiator support and i was good to go
