got my new car!!! on ebay! [Merged 6-7]

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Now are most my trips to under the hood going to be for things that keep breaking, things that need maintenance, or for installing upgrades?

I'd say go for an AWD. I drove 7 hours to go pick mine up. It had a blown turbo, bad tranny & clutch, but the guy said the engine was fine. Right... Well everything has been replaced, including the engine.

At first it seemed that just when I fixed one thing 2 others would break. Little leaks, misfires, surge, no clutch engaging, it was crazy. But my car is fine and running now and there is nothing like it. Daily Driver and FUN!!

They are like any other car out there, except without the suckiness. Take care of it and they'll be good to you. Force and abuse them and well, you know the rest.

Man fixing them is half the fun.

I bought my car on ebay a few years ago. It was lightly modded back then. If you are SMART it's a great way to find a nice deal.

I was in Japan, seller was in Brazil, and the car was in Florida! My girlfriend at the time and his sister were our mediators in Florida. I researched the VIN, had a 30 point inspection done, then had him fix everything that was wrong with the car. And I had my girlfriend test drive it. I gave him $500 deposit to hold the car while we closed the sale over a 3 week period. I paid using a cashiers check while his sister signed over the title. I didn't end up actually driving the car for the first time until a few months later. I still keep in contact with the guy. All in all, a great experience. Like I said, be smart and take all the precautions you can.

All of the above. It's like a sequence. Maintenance->Upgrades->Break->Maintenance->Upgrades->Break->...

I haven't had anything break on my car because of performance parts. Only from routine maintenance as the car gets older. As long as you don't abuse the hell out of the car or try to push it much farther than 400 whp, it's generally quite reliable.

Yeah, I think in the already DSM owners, we have some frustrations that come out when you talk to us about maint.

I have a 96 Trans Am in the back yard, It's a bit easier to work on, as for as how complicated things are, but not nearly as fun.

One thing, I will say, that makes a difference in owning a DSM is this Site. It's an amazing resource, from getting parts, to talking about tunes, to figuring out what it is that is broke.

Another thing, is our "Uniqnuess" I drive a 94 TSI and I was at autzone the other day. They were putting in my info, and it said only 5% of Eagles that year where TSI's. And thats what does it for me. For a reasonably low purchase price, you get a car that isn't super common and can handle hell.

The reason we all have "problems" is because a person who gets on here and says they are a "Light or Reasonable" driver, would kill most any other car in a few months.

DSM's are reliable, if you do like said, maintain them.

You keep asking so normal stuff to check. and others please add...

Boost Leak Checks. Have to make sure none of that forced air is flying all around.

Fluids- Important- 10 year old cars leak. Plain and simple. Even if it's a little bit of washer fluid. Just check them. You dont want to find out the hard way you were two quarts low on oil.

Belts- Important. not going into detail. 10000 of posts of why it's so important.

So here is what I think about these cars: No more maintence required then any other 10-15 year old car. Except in our cars, You pay dearly when you fail to do it. I've driven 10,000 miles on a 96 honda without changing the oil. I'd never dream of doing that in my DSM. The more complex a system becomes, the less margin for error it has. And thats what kills us all, the Small margin of error

OK cool.

Part of the reason i'm concerned about reliability is that i need it to last me through college without me having to spend a bunch of $$$ i don't have..........I've been pondering the 02-04 WRX, the '94ish VR4, and a DSM eclipse......but I'm really hoping getting a DSM will work out seeing that I'm getting a beast of a car for the price of a regular car....

"Cheap, Reliable, and fast... Pick two because you can't have all three..." Best advice ever.

"Cheap, Reliable, and fast... Pick two because you can't have all three..." Best advice ever.

He's right man. If your looking for a long term car, that wont cost money to keep running, and is fast, a DSM isn't your best bet. I honestly, wouldn't go with any sort of forced induction system. They require a lot more upkeep as your talking pressurised air, and if one checksafe fails, everything can go haywire, resulting in costly repiars.

I drove a Trans Am for just that point. The gas wasn't the best, but it moved like hell, and was cheap and easy to fix.

I myself am not a 5.0 mustang fan at all, but they can be had cheap, can move like hell if done right, and most likely wont require near as much upkeep costs as the parts are more massivly produced.

Ya, well any car I'm going to get I'll probably eventually mod....so that's why i was looking at the DSMs; they are already modded by someone who knows a lot more about cars than me, and it might save me from spending money on upgrades....

Just out of curiosity, what would be some of the first cars you would list off your head as being high powered, under 14Kish, and somewhat reliable?

Fox body mustangs. That is really all I can think of that would meet the criteria. Overall, there is no way to be cheap, reliable, and fast.

*EDIT: They're butt ugly... IMO*

F body stangs.

ws-6 trans am

A SS Impala, but has to be done right (if the break, they are god awful to fix)

But it will always stand you can have two of the three. Cheap Reliable and fast.

But again, It's all relative to what you think fast is. And personally, fast isn't fast enough for long. The first day I got in my DSM I was pleased with it's pickup. And now all i want is more.

How much HP do the WS6s usually have?

Hope you guys don't mind going off topic......

320 horse, like 340 if i'm correct torque. They are truely some beastly cars. Biggest problem is getting that HP to the ground.

stock they run like 13.5 rated. I've seen good drivers with a few mods break into 12's. Bad drivers run 14's

But gas mileage sucks, and insurance not fun. Stock trans ams are a bit cheaper, although they lack ram air. It's only a 15 hp loss though, just a bit harder to keep the wheels from slipping, as they lack a great suspension.

They are def, not off the line cars. I know in mine, you basically have to toy with it and hope to hook in second. I know a few guys, that have some decent mods that actually launch in second, because 1st is to much for them to handle. They are a difficult but rewarding car.

But don't take me out of context. :talon: :talon: :talon: :talon: for life :rocks:

If you are looking for a fast, reliable dsm, look in the classifieds here. Andy Moraitis has his 2g for sale right now for $12,500 I believe. He is a wiseman here, and you can count on it being done right and reliable. It will also push 51lbs min on pump gas, which is like 510 hp at the crank. :thumb:

I sold a nice 1g on ebay and got more than I wanted for it. The new owner hasnt ever called or emailed or anything. They drove from New Mexico to Utah gave me the rest of the cash and drove it back to New Mexico. Only had to send him a bill of sale later. He picked it up at like 2am and I was not awake. Just have to find a good seller.

What's his member name? I can't find his ad or his name anywhere.....

Bought mine off ebay 2 years ago.. the worst mistake I've ever done. Let me put it this way... every single part in that engine bay is replaced(not joking), engine was running good though. But it could be just me.

I would feel a lot more comfortable buying a car off classified here then some people on ebay.

Maintanence?

Fresh timingbelt/head gasket every time the cylinder head comes off ROFL

Oil, and filter every oil change.

Fresh coolant flush every year.

Wax.

Tires.

Some people can actually build and maintain a DSM, others just fail miserably even with all their effort.

My car will be up for sale soon too. I am just honestly getting burnt out with the hobby.
Less than 6K miles on the new buildup. Have not even been to the track one time yet.

Fly down we'll go and you can drive it home.

2007 Eclipse GT V6 nearly $30K with a warranty....1998 Eclipse GSX 5 speed with hand built 6 bolt/2600- Negotiably around $14k.... sold as is where is.

OK, I'm going to resurrect this thread.

Do you guys know of any car inspecting companies that specialize with modded cars (this is kinda a shot in the dark, but what the heck)? Or do you guys think a regular car inspector would be just fine for inspecting a DSM car?
