I asked you to cite your source, you said you've tried the FMIC. So I asked what turbo you were using... I'm not trying to make a point I'm trying to get info on using the FMIC, because I have been considering it as well.
I'm looking to go fast, actually I am already and I'm looking at one, what's YOUR point?

i dont need to make a point to anyone.

well if you looking for help on chooseing a fmic, i would go with something diffrent, think about it this way. why would you wanna go from stock smic to stock fmic off another car. if your on a budget then i would say go with the evo fmic or the jr fmic that many people have been buying. im not going to put down the evo fmic or try and talk about it because i have no clue about them, ive seen them, i dont know the size of them and ive never looked inside them. i just stated my opinion that there are alot better fmics out there for sale. fmic ive tried and worked very well. jim

I have been a huge opponent of Starion I/C, going back to mid ’90s. Having had a chance to examine EVO8 I/C and compare it to ’88 Starion I/C (the big one and the only remotely one worth considering) side by side, I must say that I am VERY IMPRESSED with the EVO8 I/C!

My years of experience tell me that it should be good for mid 11’s (or even faster). So when I hear overwhelming opinions that it is a POS, it makes me worder:

Am I totally off? or,

People repeat a bunch of crap they hear online without actually trying it out (or even holding it in their hands…)

Something tells me it's this one.

Sort of like:

Why would you ever use EVO3 turbo? It was a stock turbo, after all…
What about a STOCK Supra TT fuel pump?
Stock 2G pistons?
EVO3 Manifolds?
See where I am going here?

This logic makes no sense what so ever… Good parts are good parts and being of OEM quality, should make them MORE and not LESS desirable.

Stock Evo 8 FMIC is definitely not as bad as some people (who have zero experience with it) make it out to be.

Here's a thread with a quote from Buschur on the stock fmic. http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthread.php?t=21659&highlight=fast+stock+fmic

Do I have any experience with it? Yep, works fine for me, but then again my Evo is stock right now. :thumb:

That's not to say that I wouldn't recommend just going with a Spearco 2-216 FMIC and being done it with.

ok, im going to answer some questions,

i know i bench raceing is wrong but i just had to ask that about my car. im just so damn excited after 3 yrs of owning this car its finally making the turn towards the better. :D

i know i am in good hands w/ ams, i turst them w/ my life. and my life consits of my car :thumb:

im only going there w/ $3000, if i need more, then ill bring more. but hopefully it'll cover it.

reason for the turbo...because thats the set up i want to use, seen good results w/ other setups like it so, i chose this. if i change my mind, i change my mind.

for $350 for the intercooler is not bad. and its only been used for the first month the guy had it. why not? and exactly what GRNDSM said.

im only looking for maybe 12's. i need this car to drive to work each day on the highway.
whats the point of making a 10 second highway car?

the turbo im using is a evo 3 ported and 34mm flapper, i might change my mind if budget permits.

i dont have a clucth, i have a torque converter. ill get a after market one soon.

thanks for the replys and if anyone can figure a better setup for my budget, feel free to post it. and everything is going to be from AMS.

dont start bashing or start a fight that will make this thread close.

thanks,

Why is everything going to be from AMS? I hope you realize they are a rather expensive shop ( although very good ), so if you are trying to get the most power for the least amount of money then going there is probably not the best idea.

Also why just a 16g? Get a bolt on 50 trim and it will make tons more power. Since you're auto spool up shouldn't be too much of a concern for you anyways, and a 50 trim spools up pretty nicely.

The evo intercooler is good and way better than our sidemounts, but you can get a much better core for $350. Ever wonder why evo guys are already selling them? Sure they are good for 12s, even 11s, but they are still only efficient to a certain point.

>Ever wonder why evo guys are already selling them?

Have you spent any time on their forums? The amount of ignorance and stupidity on many of EVO forums is mind boggling… So please do not use them as an example of common sense.

But by all means use them as a source of cheap cores ;).

I will agree with you that $350 for EVO core is a bit much. But not because it is not worth it, you can find them cheaper...

I do appreciate the kind words on our quality but I notice an awful lot that when AMS is mentioned you in particular always bring up something to the effect of us being overpriced, or expensive etc. Now obviously we cannot compete with the never been heard of internet companies that blow parts out for 5% over cost because they literally have no overhead, but I would hope that the DSM community and this site in particular would like to support the shops that are trying to advance the industry. Now if you find another place that has a part cheaper I will do my best to price match. Now as I stated earlier some things just are not possible but it never hurts to ask. Heck I price match quite a bit on a daily basis. Just bring me in a printed copy or a link to where it cheaper...if I can do it then I will. AMS makes enough to get by. You dont see the owners rolling around in million dollar cars and living in mansions (Hell alot of us still live at home LOL) They are normal guys like all of us. So once again don't be shy about asking for a price match, its why I am here

oh no offense to you or your business at all. It just seems the guy that started this thread is on a "budget" or asking what the best bang for his buck is, so my reason for posting was only to point out that this can be done for a lot cheaper than $3000 and if he's on a budget it'd be easier to shop around and buy the parts whereever they can be found the cheapest, and all that stuff can easily be installed at home so that would save him some more money. I wasn't really suggesting he go to another shop, because well there really aren't any other good shops around this area that specialize in these cars and are known nationwide.

I do agree that you have a great shop, and I myself along with a few friends buy parts from AMS quite frequently. I know I have spent well over $2500 there in the past year and same goes for a few of my friends. Your quality is awesome and 99% of the time you have everything in stock that we would need and that is my reason for going to you guys and willing to spend a little extra. I have made a few comments about pricing at ams as well as a few other members on here, but I have also made comments in posts praising your work and shop without mentioning anything about the pricing, so just to clarify I didn't mean to offend you or anything like that.

Perhaps I should rephrase ... they are good cores to a certain point, however my friends car is a prime example. ( 03 evo 8 ) He was running around 20 psi on a stock intercooler ( turbo back, safc2, bov, clutch, flywheel being his only mods ) and then got a good deal on the AMS front mount. He bought that intercooler and told me they told him to expect around a 15 whp gain or so just from slapping on that intercooler. I didn't believe it and I think he had his doubts as well, but we put it on at my house and took it for a hard drive and he said the car seemed to be running a tad stronger and more consistant. This was with no tuning adjustments at the same boost level. ( the guage actually went a little above 20 psi now even though no adjustments were made to the controller )

Basically it comes down to ... you can get an evo fmic core for around 300. You can get a badass core that will be fine for a lot higher power levels for around 400 ... so why waste your time with the evo core?

I guess im not the only one getting custom piping for an Evo8 I/C around here. I just got my Evo8 I/C back from AMS from being rapaired since it had about 5 leaks. I will be getting custom piping for my Evo8 I/C soon too. My I/C came with the car, but no piping was installed on it yet.

Hey, a little FYI !!! I have one of of JR's fmic kits and you get way more out of it then what you pay. Do a search on JR fmic and look at the flow numbers. My fmic was 500 with piping, couplers, and t-bolt claps. Hmmmm, compared to the big greddy and greddy piping kit for what 1100?? And if i'm not mistaken the numbers are way too close to justify an extra 600 bucks. Look, that's fine if you want to talk about fmic's and "hear say" but i'm telling you what I HAVE ON MY CAR, and the numbers are out there. But I would not mention cheap and JR in same sentence unless it's about price.

And to play devils advocate, if an evo can run 11's on the stock fmic, it sould be enough for a guy to have a nice 12sec dsm. Sounds like he isn't trying to break shep's record or anything.

Where can I get a badass core for 400.00?

well, i started to think about the turbo and fmic choice. im thinking about the to4b and im looking for a ic for a good price. but u do get what u pay for u know? how much is the bolt on 50 trim? and for a evo core i thought it was a good deal for the ic. but maybe if ams could find me a good core for a good price for my budget... :shhh: LOL, j/k. but seriously, i love ams and they are abit pricey, but they do a great job and my car will be in great hands. i dont know, when i talk to eric, ill ask him what would be best for my budget and his ideas.

oh yea, extremepsi.com has a evo 3 ported and 34mm flapper for $620 ;) :p .

ill just call soon, thanks for ur out put and keep the ideas coming!!!

I stand by my previous statement that you should NOT use 34mm on an EVO 3 turbo.

That housing simply does not have enough material to take advantage of that large flapper. And if you are not fully using it, it is hurting you for 3 reasons:

1. You have a larger area flapper with the same force WG actuator, so your WG will be more likely to “blow open” and loose boost at high RPMs
2. You have bigger obstruction in front of your still small (remember, the housing does not allow you to make it large enough) WG hole so that defeats the purpose of doing this in the first place.
3. You pay more for this mismatch of features.

Leon

I cannot even count how many EVO III 16G's that boost creeped and then failed to do so once we ported open the W/G hole and put a larger flapper door in them. I can understand your speculation but it works. At least when we have ported them and installed the larger door.

Eric

my old 16g also creeped until a larger flapper was installed and some porting was done. The flapper worked for me so I don't see why it wouldn't work for someone else.

I saw the pte 50 trim for 799.99 somewhere a few days ago, but I forget where. I'm sure it can be had for $850 - $900 without looking too hard. I think you'd have more fun with this turbo, and the potential is there to run a LOT faster than a 16g ever could. 16gs are great I will admit, but something a tad bigger is a lot more fun.

Since we are on the topic of AMS they have a badass front mount intercooler kit for $1195 if I remember correctly. I think the core only was $699? This is all you would EVER need for 99.9% of us on this board, so I would spend the extra money and just buy that kit. I'm sure custom piping will run you $400 - $500 if you are having it done at AMS, and their piping for that particular intercooler is only around $500 as well. ( I'm assuming since it's 1195 - 700 ) In the end you'd spend an extra $350 on the whole fmic / piping setup, but it would be well worth it and you'd never outflow it with a 50 trim. Once again it all goes back to how much you want to spend.

you should check into the agp rs52. And if you want to go with the evo316g they are cheap from koumotorsports.com. They are 520 and are in IL.

not to start any thing but to say the evo 8 i/c is good for 11 is just wrong if you look at all the fast evos they are runnig different i/c i wish some people would just be queit and just let the man test his stuff and he will find out if his set up will work its not your money its his maybe in a month or two he will turn around and love or hate it. why ams not to say anything bad about there work its that they say they know everything or just about everything about dsm then why when i went in there for a b&m short shifter for my n/t and my turbo dsm they had to call around for alittle bit to see if it would fit my n/t that tells me there is something wrong with them and there are not as everyone make them to be. i know a few shops around ill that are better and have better prices then them.

I would rethink getting the 34mm flapper door. If you look at the Exhaust housing on the 16g there is just not enough material there (in my opinion) to safely port the wastegate passage out enough to make the door effective, without worring about cracking. I for one would just get the 16g with stock flapper and run 20psi w/ supporting mods, <--which it looks like you'll have, and not have any boost creep.

Clipse your automatic right? yeah i seen u around...afta you get your stuff together we can run :) :dsm:
