I just want to hear some opinions on the MAF situation with DSMs. I am debating on whether I want to hack the stock MAF or upgrade to a GM MAF with the translator. My future plans include well over 300 whp.

How many lbs/min of air are you going to be flowing? You can over run the stock maf. But if you are going to put anything bigger than a 16g on your car you may want to get the GM MAF just in case. Otherwise keep the stock maf, if you dont mind recirculating your BOV

You'll need a maf upgrade. The stock 1g maf starts missing hertz counts as you approach 300crank horsepower. With the lower hertz number the ecu thinks there is less air coming into the engine than there really is, and you run lean.

BTW, the maf is not a restriction in the sense that the diameter is too small. Although it is a bit small. You can upgrade to a GM maf with a maf translator. The 3" GM maf can accurately measure up to 700+ hp of airflow. And then if that's not enough you can go to a 3.5". But you'll not be tuning with the translator at that level. You'll be jsut using it for the maf upgrade. Which will allow you to tune your fuel to extract more power out of your setup. And allow you to run bigger injectors. It is a piggyback. Don't run more than 650s w/ a piggyback unless you're rather experienced at tuning out deadtimes and dealing with the high timing maps associated with injector compensation.

If you are planning to stay under 500whp I would just go with a 2gmaf set up. There have been cars up to 500whp with this set up. I was going to go with the gm but after watching my buddys play with the translator, I would never put myself through that. Tuning is a nightmare and my mechanic(Jack's SS) told me when just little things like tempreture change can mess up the tuning and u have to adjust it because the gm maf dont read intake temp, but im not sure. In Colorado we have a lot of tempreture change so they are always messing with the translator. If u can find one ive heard the new evo maf is even better, and ive heard the 3g v6 maf can be used and flows within 1% of an evo maf

Without the IAT the PCM with default it to near -32 degrees which will lead to a rich mixture and possibly other problems.

And, the gm maf has a IAT wire right by the hot wire for the flow. It collects the IAT and flow simultaniously to spit out a single reading that incorporates the two. This is why the IAT output to your ecu on the translator is locked. It is set at 80*F so that the translator flow output is combined with it is spot on to the gm maf output when calculated by the ecu.

OIW, the gm maf does the IAT/flow calculation already. Thus there's no need for another IAT input.

i was just wondering for an upgraded setup do you need to run the maf-t gen 2 or the pro? or can you just use the dsm maf translator with the GM MAS? sorry new to turbo aspirated cars. thanks!
