I was looking at a couple different sites because Iam in the process of getting supporting mods for a t-28 and one site claims that if you get a MAF and translator, an AFC is not needed. Is this true? Is it just very limiting to tune with a MAF/Translator?
Thanks,
Bryan Tracy

The maft does come with fuel control. Normally it's in increments of 5%, but the newer version can do 2% for wot settings I believe. Also if you have the translator in the engine bay, then you have to get out of the car and pop the hood to make adjustments. Versus the safc right at your finger tips. You'll need a pocketlogger tuning device with either safc or maft. There are tons of threads about tuning the maft, problems people have, and success stories.

If you're just looking to throw a t-28 and supporting mods on, are you sure you need the maft? If you don't have or don't plan to get bigger injectors, then you don't need to control them. And the maft is not cheap, so you could keep the 2g maf and spend that money on other supporting mods.

An AFC can be beneficial for "fine-tuning" after get in the ball-park w/the MAF-T.

I have a pocketlogger on the way, a 190lph pump waiting for install and have plans for 550's and an afc. It think thats the best way to tune for the mods i have. Im just one of the people that like the sound of the BOV vented to atmosphere.
Thanks for the reply's,
Bryan Tracy

You don't need to mount the MAFT under the hood, it's just the easiest way to do it. If you mount it in the car, it's only a couple wires more than a SAFC.

On a 2g, you don't really need a MAFT, especially at that airflow level.

Depending on your goals, you should look into DSMLink.

It all depends. They're identical in their approach to tuning and both very capable of a decent tune. But don't think that an afc is any more accurate simply because of a few more tuning points. Most of the cars I've tuned with an airflow simulator varied little from tuning point to tuning point.

maft and afc are both very ballpark methods for tuning.

dsmlink is teh bomb!

If someone wants to give me dsmlink im game!! Lol but seriously I wish i could afford DSM link. Maybe ill just wait till i can afford it and go all out. Ill install my T-28 and keep it under 15psi.
Thanks guys,
Bryan Tracy

The new version tunes in 2% airflow (which is 1% fuel) + also adds RPM points to tune. There is NO reason to have an AFC. Most guys who have AFC's hookup with a MAFT are the ones who post about problems.

Ok well I bought a new s-AFCII this morning and my datalooger is in transite. Now its time to scower the forum for how to tune... I've owned myt car now for about 9 monthes and have done all my own work, but have no clue how to tune. This is either going to be really fun :thumb: or really fatel to my car :thumbdown .
Thanks again everyone,
Bryan

It should be fun. If you need help let me know be happy to answer your questions

Just curious but where are you reading MAFT adjusts in 2% increments? I got the 2.01 last week and it clearly says one click on any dial equals 5%.

CAN YOU PLEASE ELAVORATE A LITTLE. I ALREADY HAVE A S-AFC II INSTALLED IN MY GST. I BOUGHT A GREDDY BOV AND I LOVE THE WAY IT SOUNDS WHEN IT VENTS INTO THE ATMOSPHERE ON MY FRIENDS CRX. AND THE CHEAPEST WAY TO ACHIEVE THAT IS A GM MAF & TRANSLATOR.

The problems come from stupidity. Either one is wired wrong or one is set up wrong. You would want to get it running with one or the other zerod out so you can tune with one at a time. For instance, do injector compensation with the MAFT and fine tuning with the AFC.

Cool I just didn't know if spending the extra 3 bills was wort it because if I were to sell my S-AFC II I would probably get no more than $200.00 That would set me back about $150 cause I paid $350 installed.
Thanks I'm going to keep my eyes open for a MAFT set up. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Just remember that all the MAFT set up is going to do for you is allow you to vent. The tuning function of the MAFT is basically taken care of by the AFC. But if that's all you want it for, cool :thumb:

If I remember correctly the maft setup will use airflow to tune(and it may also use RPM's, but "KP" can elaborate on this more), not by Trottle Position, which if you think about it is the shit

Yes, the load levels are based on airflow and engine speed, rather than throttle position, which is a good thing.

 Great now the problem will be geting a killer deal on the set up. I was thinking on going through "E-bay" although I'm open to suggestions. Please help!!!!! :dsm:

Really the only good deals I've seen are used parts from the classifieds. Otherwise, it's $200 for the blow thru pipe(unless you customize/make your own) $200 for the MAFT and $50-$200 for a MAF depending on used or new. Good luck :thumb:

MAF = 30$ 3" LT1, junkyards, ebay, anywhere
MAFT = 200$ ramchargers.com , they make them, so youll have the newest version
piping= 0$ - 20$ well, i already have irc uicp and all i needed was 2, 3"to2.5" couplers from any local hardware store and i was set. judging by your engine pics, you may need a 90 degree pipe, you can get either aluminized or stainless from www.jcwhitney.com and cut to size, then cut your tb elbow and slap that maf in between and use the couplers to connect. idk your intercooler piping diameter so dont take 2.5" as a reference...measure yours then buy the correct pipe

Actually Ramchargers does not make them, we do. I used to work at Ramchargers when this product was introduced but now they are a dealer.

oh i learned something today. i just assumed because DSMTuners has it listed as RC's own product. now i know where to order from :thumb:

Ok so I orderd an AFC and Logger and they will be here on 7/29. When i get them installed should I run my car and get a log before i use the afc? Or is there base settings? Also, nowe that I have an AFC and Logger, would the only reason for a MAF and Translator be to vent my BOV? That seems to be what im reading in other threads. Also, is there any other way to vent?? Sorry for all the dumb questions, Im just trying to learn all i can.
Thanks,
Bryan Tracy
