i cant engage my 1st gear, well, once in awhile if i really try i can, 2nd is starting to be that way. so...im pretty sure it's my syncros that are out, but some people have been tellin my that i jus need to a tranny flush since i jus bought the car and the previous owner probably havent done it. i jus thought they were stupid until i kept gettin answers like oh do the flush first it might help before thinkin about rebuilding the tranny or buying use one. my problem is that and the fact that i need to do this quick because im havin a hard time not starting in 1st gear and now 2nd is doing the same. let me know guys...i need this fix asap. thanks...

Get some penzoil syncromesh at auto zone should fix your problem. Yea Im sure the stock fluid is still in there as well. You will need 3 qts of fluid to fill it up. How to is at
www.vfaq.com under transmission or drivetrain. Also check the clutch system for leaks the slave is known to leak under the boot causing the clutch not to disengauge. You may also need to adjust the clutch master cylinder rod out.

well 3,4,5, and reverse engages but 1 and 2 is the only one not, i was thinkin syncros because 1 and 2 gears share syncros so that was why i think it would be that. so im pretty sure the slave master isnt the cause of engagement, but i will check it out jus in case. im gon do the flush tomorrow morning and see what comes of it. i really hope it will be it but i highly doubt it. ANY MORE INSIGHTS ON THIS MATTER!!!

1st and 2nd have indidviual syncros they share the same hub sleve however that the shift fork operates. 1st and second share the same shift fork 3/4 share the same and 5th and reverse share the same fork. The grinding you are hearing is the hub sleve teath and the teath on the gear itself clashing(the gear is going to fast for the hub to engauge to it). The synco slows down the gear itself so the hub sleve can conect with the gear. Using the proper fluid for manual transmissions with syncos is very important for proper syncro operation of slowing down the gear.

thanks for the tranny 101 lesson. yeah, im gon do the flush to see if it helps. HOPES IT DOES. cross your fingers for me...thanks again though

It needs a chance to get into the syncos before it starts working properly give it time.
When at Idle with the clutch pushed to the floor how far in inches off the floor before the car starts creaping forward? You could have busted the 1/2 shift fork if your really having problems.
