i have propabally come to one of the hardest decisions to make since i've joined the DSM world, as of right now i own a 1993 eagle talon TSi, and a 1992 Galant Vr4 145/1000. I need to git rid of one of them, do to a shortage on money, and i will be heading off to college soon so i have no need to own two cars.
i will explain a little about the cars, and hopefully you guys can help me out with which one i should keep.

Eagle Talon:talon:

The Good:
32k miles on the engine 105 on body
mechanically sound
Very clean no rust and very few minor dents

The Bad:
Auto transmission
needs tires and a front end allignment

Galant Vr4:dsm:

The Good:
Very hard to find
strong manuel transmission

The Bad:
rust, will need to be removed asap but, most of it is on parts that can be removed and replaced IE. Doors and hood
140k miles on engine and car, will need engine rebuild soon.

I know most of you will say it's my choice, but what would you do if you had to get rid of one of them?

No choice at all for me,sell the Talon. Even if it were a 5-speed Tsi AWD. Hands down. Other than weight and aerodynamics, the Galant is superior in every way IMO.

Unless there are problems with the Galant you aren't mentioning, merely having 140,000 miles on the clock does not nessasarily mean its going to be less reliable. Take some of the profits (as someone else already mentioned) and do some preventive maintanance.

I have had three GVR4s in the past 10 years, all of them have been stone reliable even modded. I own two currently,my daily driver/beater has 190,000 on it, I would not hesitate to jump in it and drive cross country tonight if I had to.

You just have to sell it to the right person

yeah ok it will take forever to find the "right person" to buy a not-in-so-good-shape GVR4. I dont think he has a decade to sell this car. No one in their rightm ind will pay 5k for a 4 door beater-looking car that has a turbo....since alot of the older and more wealthy people (since you think they are the ones to buy it) dont want turbo becasue back in the day the Mx-6s and datsuns that had turbos, constantly blew head gaskets and they now tend to stay away from the boosted cars.

Most people that own Vr4's are a little older than the average dsmer and can afford to spend the money.

Ok well these "little older" people that can "afford to spend the money" will NOT look at a car like the GVR4 because they are old and out dated, they will get the upgraded version....EVOLUTION....hey they have the money to spend right?

Ok the Talon is AWD? even btter, sell the thing for more now, fix the GVR4 and your set to go.

well as of now i have the talon set up on car soup, but might be putting the galant up someplace soon to and just see what one gose first. But if you guys wanna see the talon or know anyone who wants one here's the site.
Thanx for the input guys, now i'm a little more confident about keeping the Galant
heres the car soup site for anyone interested

Unless you have the time and money to buy a donor GVR-4 to get replacement panels and other needed parts plust at least 1000-1500 bucks to get body work and paint done I would skip the VR-4. Sell it to someone who wants to put the time and money into it, unless that person is you.

I know everybody is saying keep the galant, but in my opinion you should sell it, if possible for a larger price to somebody(maybe to somebody from the forum that tell you to keep it)!:sneaky: Then you are going to have a nice tsi awd in better shape, a better looking car. NO college girl likes when your car breaks down! Think about it! I do not think you would be sorry for selling the gvr4, when it the future buy yourself an EVOLUTION, right?
I think it is time for kicking the old 4 door when it is still worth something and still works!
You would not have the time for extensive project like the galant when in college, which it looks like it is going to be.
I see the sentimental value of the car as the only problem stopping you from getting rid of the Galant! Well you can't afford two cars, correct?
The Galant may be rare, but almost nobody (outside DSM) cares, so if you keep it you are going bring it to its death with a lot of money put into it.

There you go! Good Luck!

I completely agree with Kruci. Just because the vr-4 is a car that everyone on this board would like to own, yours is NOT something that you want to be taking to college. Everyone keeps saying that you can sell the talon and with that money fix up the vr-4, but the point of selling one of them in the first place is to get extra cash! If you had the resources to spend the money you make on fixing up the vr-4, you would probably just keep both cars. The talon is going to much more reliable and that is what you need to bring to college.

well i really wish i could keep both cars, but i do not have the funds to support two DSM's at 18 and still go to college, I am not planning on doing anything to either of the cars, leaveing them stock till i get out of college the reliability should be there in either one. As long as i don't start modding them.
Well if you guys have any offers for the VR4, let me know, i'm kinda at the point where i just need to get rid of one so the first one that gets cash in my hand is the one that going.
again thanx guys for all the responses, and hopefully i'll sell one of them soon.

If you need the money, sell the TSI, if your just trying to get rid of a car, sell the TSI, the VR4 is getting harder and harder to find, by the time you get out of college, you will be so happy you have a car, that no one else can obtain. Plus, if your hanging out with people who dont respect your car for what it is ( IE ugly 4door, etc..) those are not teh people you should be hanging out with.
Personally the Galant is the ultimate sleeper. If they dont respect you- MAKE THEM!!!!!!

Or, if the money is not the option, drive the TSI, store teh Galant- storage, parents house, freinds house, etc...- when you get out, sell the TSI, fix teh VR4, or keep both and store both, buy a $500-$1000 honda, enjoy your saving money on your 85- octane,35 MPG. Then scrap it, burn it, and send it into orbit upon the resurection of the ALL MIGHTY VR-4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

only problem is that i took a loan out for the Vr4, so i need to sell one of them to get the money to pay off the loan so one or both have to go...

You'll hate yourself for selling the vr4 but you need a car to drive+ the vr4 needs work. Though it is hard to find and you owe money for it that is one bill less to pay and you can save that money for yourself or put it in the talon. But if it was me i would bite a bullit and keep them if it meant getting a second or third job and revising your expense to income ratio. Takeoff insurance and walk everywhere or get a ride from your girl, and store them at your parents house or yours or whatever. till you get it right

If you want to sell quick, I'd say put it up on AutoTrader. I sold my N/T Eclipse with 114k miles the next day! :O

Where do I start?

The GVR4, like most people say, is a rarer car but needs more work done to it than the Talon. If you REALLY like it, then by all means keep it. Later, it would be easier to find another Talon. Or your could think about selling the GVR4, but at least you enjoyed the car a little more. Besides, 4 doors = more room for the ladies ;)

Another possible option would be selling both cars, and buy a Honda. You could buy a swapped hatch for cheap, and you would have a good, reliable daily driver that is somewhat quick and still gets nice MPG. Or you could buy any other beater car. The important thing it's that it's reliable.

Having a reliable, slow car in college > having a broken, fast car in college.

Believe me in this last one, I learned it the hard way. It sucks when you don't have money to go out with your friends and chicks because you need to repair your car...

I think at this point in your life (going to college and whatnot) you need something reliable. I say go w/ talon.

I agree with the above statement, and the costs and down time to rebuild the engine in the VR4 won't help your money problems. Reliabity is the thing you need to consider now. But, if there is a way you can work around it and just put it in storage until your out of school. That would be something that I would consider if I were you. I agree with all those who would keep the VR4. You will kick yourself for selling it now. But both will be classics soon enough. Hard decision, I am glad its not mine to make.

well one of the options running through my head is to sell them both and get a little more reliable fast car, like a 1991-1994 audi S4, and leave that stock till i get outa college then start messing with it. but there is alot running through my mind about what i should do...

My advice would be to stay clear of VW/Audis. Specially if they are older ones...they are very prone to electrical problems.

You are in college, you don't need a too "blingy" or fast car...just something that transports you.

If you want fast and reliable, go with a domestic. But then MPG would suck. That's why I told you to find a clean, swapped Honda. You could find one for cheap, and they're somewhat quick and still being very reliable.

Having sold my first dsm FWD talon and now having a 91 galant......keep the vr-4! But money talks so sell them both and pay your bills off. I get offers on my vr4 everyday! Once the right price come along this nice 4 door is gone. If you are over 6'2 its hard in my opinion fitting into a 1st gen dsm other than the vr-4.

stay away from Audi like starscream said, bad news if your wanting reliablity. You'd do better to keep the Talon if thats your plans, I personally love Audi, they are great cars when they are new, but give it some high miles. And wham! Look out, Can we say MONEY???

right now a honda sounds like the way to go, LOL even though i would feel bad for letting all you DSM'ers down, but i think everyone needs a second reliable car if you own a DSM, so thoughts going through my head now are, sell the talon stash the VR4 somewhere, work my ass off this summer and buy a cheap honda, to drive for the 3 years of college and then start building up the galant, while i still have the reliable honda:barf: to drive, and when ever the VR4 breaks, oh well i mean a honda can't be that bad...WTF

A FWD AT Talon vs. a AWD MT VR4, what's there to think about?
Too true, Im a die-hard 1G talon guy but an auto fwd talon vs an awd mt vr4...vr4 for sure, what you make of the Talon put it into the VR4 and make it nice. The VR4's are hard to find so keep it, you will be kicking your self if you dont, 1G Talon's are easy to find. To clearify...keep the VR4 for sure.
