Ok I got a 92 laser awd and i was pulling down my street today and it just died. it turns over wont start, I tried pop starting it and nothing. on top of that the last couple of days its been idle surging just out of nowhere... im not sure where to start? I turned to my haynes and it said install a jumper wire from the battery to the fuel pump check terminal and Im not really sure if i used the right one but I used my test light and it lit up at first then wen my wife turned it over the light went away??? A lil lost right now and some help would be greatly appreciated.
 
a few quick checks will help you diagnose the problem...
start with SPARK.
verify that spark is getting to the plugs as the engine is cranking. There are many ways to do this. remove a plug, connect the plug wire back up to it and lay the plug across a good grounding point. Then, while the wife cranks the car, watch the gap between the electrodes on the spark plug and confirm that you're seeing an electrical arc across this gap. if sparks good on all 4 cylinders move on to fuel...
FUEL.
first verify that the fuel pump is pressurizing the fuel rail. if you don't have a gauge to check the fuel pressure simply remove the return line coming off of your fuel pressure regulator (its on the end of the fuel rail on the drivers side) and put it in a gas can and again have the wife crank the car. if fuel starts pumping out of the line going into the gas can then its not your fuel pump.

once you get this far post up your findings and we'll help you make it to the next step to troubleshoot your no start issue. its easy stuff and maybe you'll learn something along the way. :thumb:

Have the capacitors been replaced in your ECU?
The fuelpump test terminal is a female spade terminal, in a heavy black plastic coating. You need to jumper it to the +12 volts of the battery to bypass the ECU and MFI relay. If that works, and your fuelpump starts building pressure and the car starts, I'd suspect acid damage in the ECU.
 
ok so i think i figured out wats wrong but need an opinion or two... It turns over but the cam gears dont spin while the the crank is spinning so Im pretty sure im looking at a timing belt. but i am not 100% sure
 
if its cranking and the cam gears arent moving then your timing belt is a issue try checking for tension at the belt to see if it came off or snapped
 
Either way if the cams are not moving with the crank one of more of the valves have likely crashed into the pistons and are now bent. Expect that you will have to pull the head, rebuild or replace it and install a new timing belt, tensioner, and pulleys.

Depending on the mileage you may need a water pump and seals for the front side of the engine or both sides, if you see signs of the crank seal leaking.
