Fuel Capacity [Merged 11-6] gas tank size gallons

What is the size of the gas tank in my 90 awd(16 gallons???)I dont have the owners manul and the haynes manual does not have this listed! Please help im trying to do the ratio for some octane booster and im getting pissed that this information is hard for me to find!!!


ALL DSMs have the same 16-gallon capacity. Different sources will fudge .1 gallon or so, and it's yet to be determined what the useable capacity is.

maybe there's still gas after the needle drops below the E. i guess the only way to know for sure is to totally run out of gas and then fill it up. but i wouldn't suggest doing that.

How does it have a 17 gallon tank? The most I've ever put in was a touch over 13 and the needle was right on empty at the time.

That is just what I have read. If you look at the 1000 answered questions it says in there.

Get an owner's manual off eBay. Look for shop manuals as well.

Yes, you have a divided gas tank, with a jet pump on the driver's side run by the bypass fuel. You'll see the warning light come on and go back out depending on how well it's pulled fuel from the driver's side to refill the passenger side, where the low warning light sensor lives.

Although the "capacity" of the tank is 16.9, it's seldom anyone can put in more than 14. I don't know how much of that 16.9 can really be used by the fuel pump, and I don't know what happens if you're low and throw the fuel away from the pump with a hard right-hand offramp. I've not looked at how deep the "saddle" of the tank is.

I don't have an owners manual and not sure where my haynes is at the moment. But when looking online i've seen anywhere from 16 to 16.5 gallons,. how big exactly is it?

The Owner's Manual puts it at "(approx.) 16 gallons". You'll probably never put in more than fourteen. I don't know at what point you start sucking air.
Owner's Manuals are all over eBay. Grab a couple.

Is it the same for the Talon and Eclipse because I always thought it was smaller. I wait to fill up until the fuel light comes on and I never get more than 11 gallons in it.

Yeah that's kinda like a built in safety feature because we both know how long some people wait to put gas in their car. My girlfriend's car (nissan altima) has a 20 gallon tank and she will run it below the E and it will only take about 17 gallons at most to fill up again. It's just to help keep from running out of gas, an early warning.

1990 thru 1996 had a 15.9 gallon tank on all models.'97 and '98 had 17.0 gal.

Of all the times this had been asked, it's the first time I'd heard of any change midway through procuction. I'm suspect of the source.

Anyone know how many gallons you have in your tank from when the gas light turns on? The second the light comes on i fill my tank and it only takes 12 gallons.

i dont know how much gas mine uses, but i do know the second the gas pump quits pumping, i cannot try to top it off or gas will go everywhere !

I've noticed that my idiot light for gas will come on, stay on for a few miles, then fade out for a long time before coming back. And considering the different rates at which the fuel gauge needle drops over the course of a tank, I've stopped trusting both the gauge and the light. Now I just fill up at half a tank, which helps keep water vapor out.

My gas light hasn't worked for ages. I can drive my car clear down to E, and then some and still have no signs of any gas light showing up. So I tend to just fill up at 1/4 tank whenever I can.

I go for about 120 miles on the first quarter, then from 3/4-1/4 it goes for about 40 miles then not sure how much for the rest

^^ Sounds the same as mine. The first time I started paying attention to the mileage and stuff, the gas was done to the 3/4 line and the tripometer said something like 120, so I did the math and came up with 480 miles per tank. I thought, "Wow! This thing gets great gas mileage!!" 50 miles later I'm on 1/2. I guess it all evens out.

the same thing happens with mine. I usually get 300-40 miles per tank. Also when i go to fill up, there is a lot of air pressure when the gas starts to go in that it causes the gas to come back up and hit the tip of the nozzle so it cuts it off at like every dollar. Anyone elses do this?

This has been discussed ad nauseum. There are 2 fuel level senders in your GSX tank. the 2 average out a fuel level. the tank is saddle shaped to go over your driveshaft. so, though you may have 4 gallons in the tank, each sender is only seeing 2 gallons. make a couple of hard turns and slosh that crap around in there and you'll notice the light coming on and off. also, the tank is 17 gallons. I hope all of this helped all of you, but for the future be sure to search. there have been about umpteen million posts on this already and Defiant usually closes them due to their redundant nature.

I don't know how similar they are but in my 1g there is 2.1 gallons left according to the manual.
