What is the size of the gas tank in my 90 awd(16 gallons???)I dont have the owners manul and the haynes manual does not have this listed! Please help im trying to do the ratio for some octane booster and im getting pissed that this information is hard for me to find!!!

ALL DSMs have the same 16-gallon capacity. Different sources will fudge .1 gallon or so, and it's yet to be determined what the useable capacity is.

This is kinda a funny problem.

My gas gauge works properly and everything.. But!

When it reads E, I fill it up. And I can only fit 9 gallons in it every fill up.

Now it has JUST come to my attention, that dsm gas tanks hold 16 gallons.
It's not supposed to read E when you have 7 gallons left, is it?

I have had several cars with band gas guages I normaly just figure out how many miles I can go on a tank. And just use the trip odometer. They are too dang expensive to replace some thing like $450 (from mistsubishi) give or take a few.

My gauge was acting screwy after putting in my first pump. I opened it back up to put my 255 in and found the arm with the float was on the wrong side of the sending unit. Before I fixed it it would never read full, just stick half way and then after the fuel level dropped it would come down to about a quarter tank on the gauge and stick there. Works great now though. Hope that helps.

Alright, if I'm not mistaken, we have a gas light?

It comes on when we're low, does this work properly/go bad?

How many gallons do you have when that comes on?

Edit: I know I should have searched and I did! I figured my gas gauge was bad, I just wanted an opinion specialized to my situation.

Thanks mods :)

It's normal for DSM's. My 1990 Talon did the same just like my 1995 GSX does now. I am at 11 gallons when the gauge is at E (light turns on between 9 and 10). I ignore the fuel gauge and rely more on my trip meter/odometer as my destinations rarely change. I usually fill up between 12 and 13 gallons to be safe and put less stress on the fuel pump.

on a stock to light modded DSM, you can still get around 50 miles after the idiot light comes on ....

Really you should never let the light come on, its not good for the fuel pump to run that low on fuel.

Normally that is correct about the light and yes low fuel puts more stress on the fuel pump. However, the light on DSMs comes on very early in some cars. You can have 6 or more gallons in your tank and the will light come on.

Well when your gauge doesn't work you learn to rely on that light. Thats what I do.

It's better to fill up your tank full, reset your trip odometer, and go by miles driven. But I realize some people don't fill it up every time they get gas, so then they have to go by the light.

I get 275 miles per tank give or take (200-340 depending on my foot). My dummy light comes on with about 3-4 gallons left. I usually fill up before the light starts to constantly stay on, instead of fading on and off everytime I hit the brakes and the gas sloshes forward.

It's not good to run a car under a 1/4 of a tank due to sloshing. And especially in a DSM because we have very poor baffeling. That's why someone thought of doing a tank pump feeding to a gas holding cell being drawn by an external. Less chances of the second pump seeing no fuel and the engine as well.

As for the reason, mostly because a semi botched fuel pump install. Mine does it but I always fill it back up whenever it hit's a 1/4 on my gauge because I know it's just above a 1/4 tank then. My car has never sputtered in despiration for fuel since I've owned it. DON'T wait for the idiot light. Our cars are prone to breaking enough as it is. Plus, however long you have is not written in stone so take these other poeples figures with a grain of salt.

According to the manual, my car has a 16 gal tank.

Is there a common issue with the sender not reading correctly?

When the guage is on E I pump in around 10-11 gals.

I'm getting 25-26mpg, so with 16 gals I should be able to get right around 400 miles to a tank, vs 250 I get right now.

It's annoying having to fill up every 2-3 days with only a 250 mile range.

Wondering if there are smaller than normal tanks or if my gauge is off. Would rather not test it by possibly running out of fuel.

In a lot of cars when the gas gauge needle is on E and the light is on you still have few gallons in the tank as a reserve. The quantity of gas remaining in the tank differs from car to car but there's usually something left in there. My car is almost the same as yours. When the light comes on I can only put in about 13galons so there must be at a bit over 2 gallons in the tank.

take the amount of fuel you fill up with (12 gal) and miles you drove (250) then divided 250/12=20.8833333333333

I would be happy with that fuel milage.

Right....???

10 gals for 250 miles is 25mpg... reason I said car gets 25mpg. Some tanks I put a little less, depends how I drive.

Only other gasser I have is a Jeep and when it's on E... it's empty. Tank is 23 gal and I can put pretty much 23 gals in it.

I've pushed it about 35-40 miles once the gas light started coming on before I couldn't take it anymore. I'd guess about a gallon and a half or so is left once that light starts coming on.

I've made it about 55 mile on the freeway before from the time my Fuel light came on(long drive and Really didn't feel like stopping) but my light comes on when I have about 3-4 gal. left...If I fill it up right when it comes on I can only put between 11-13 gallons in

If anybody has ever taken the Fuel pump out it doesn't take much to bend the float...
So everyone last bit is gonna be different Obviously

My sending unit might be going, or i don't know but i thought it was weird that the gauge was almost on E and i didn't get a low fuel light. But when i went to fill it up, i put in 6 1/2 gal. and my gauge read almost full.

Which is weird, then my gauge falls down dramatically.

I have had the same problem as everyone else, I thought my fuel gauge was off on my 98 gs, it would hit like 160 on empty but I took it to 280 miles on it once and filled up like 15.6 gallons I think. I wouldn't suggest this cause it was having problems getting the fuel into the starter LOL but I got a gsx now and both times I filled it on empty it filled about 12 gallons at like 220 miles. Pretty sure the gauges are wrong on like all of these though.
