Fuel Capacity [Merged 11-6] gas tank size gallons

What is the size of the gas tank in my 90 awd(16 gallons???)I dont have the owners manul and the haynes manual does not have this listed! Please help im trying to do the ratio for some octane booster and im getting pissed that this information is hard for me to find!!!


ALL DSMs have the same 16-gallon capacity. Different sources will fudge .1 gallon or so, and it's yet to be determined what the useable capacity is.

There is supposed to be some gas left in the tank when that light comes on. Would you prefer your car to run out of gas 30 seconds after you see the low fuel light? It means exactly what it says, you're LOW on fuel, not out of fuel. You can drive for quite a ways once your idiot light comes on.

I have seen 2Gs with inaccurate gas gauges but it sounds like your is probably about right. Most have a light that comes on with 3 or so gallons left. Gives you time to get to a gas station.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I can make 50 miles easy after the idiot light comes on... and then some probably.

maybe you have a blown bulb or something..either that or your gauge might not be right

then you're going about finding your mileage all wrong.. fill the tank, zero the odometer. drive drive drive. fill it up again. divide the miles on the odometer by the gallons required to fill it up.

i think a lot of the 2g's have funky gas lights too. mine comes on with 1/4 tank left, then turns off. on again wth 1/8 tank, then off. on again at E.

My 1G comes on at about 1/4 left but turns back on. it stays solid after about 1/8. Don't push your lick after you hit the "E" unless you drive down streets with 4 gas stations on each block or you'll find out 1st hand just why they call them "idiot lights"

AWDs have the gas tank split by the rear driveline. There's two level sensors, but the warning light is only on the passenger side. If you're down to about a half-tank, a good right turn will turn on the warning light. The fuel return from the fuel rail goes into a jet pump on the top of the fuel pump holder, and it sucks gas from the driver's side of the tank to the passenger side and the fuel pump. After a few miles, this will "refill" the part of the tank by the pump and the low-level warning light will go back out.
The "capacity" of the DSM fuel tank remains an enigma. Although it may have that 16-gallon capacity, I don't know how much of that is accessible to the pump, and if you're low enough to pull gas from the right side and run out, you could still have (a gallon? Two? Three?) gas in the driver's side, but if the fuel pump doesn't have returning fuel to drive the jet pump, it won't be able to use it. I think the most I've put in was about 14.9.
If you ever sputter from running out of gas, a good, hard left-hand throw might get you enough to get to a station. But I'll leave the testing of this concept to one of you.

Is it just me or dose the gas gage suck like I can go 200 mi and it not even move it seams then all in like 50 more mi it drops to under a 1/2 then it seems like it gose down as it should but not at the top. I would think it the senser was guned up but it dose it the same amount every time.

its says that my car has a 16.9 gallon tank , but when my low fuel light comes on , and i fill up i only put in about 12-13 gallons. how could this be??? help please????

On 2g eclipse's the low fuel light comes when you only have 2 gallons left in your tank, 2g eclipse's have 2 gallon reserve thats when the low fuel light comes on, so dont worry your car wont leave you in like 30 seconds after you see your low fuel light come on its just telling you, you only have 2 gallons left of gas and you better get to a gas station SOON!

but if you calculate the mileage fill your tank all the way up and reset your trip and then drive till it's low and fill it up again and use the new trip number and the gallons you just put in to figure it out

I own a 97 eagle talon TSI AWD. I didn't get an owners manual with it when i purchased it. My 95 GST said it had a 16.9 gallon gas tank. I was wondering if anyone who owns the same year/model as my talon could tell me if that is what their owners manual says in it. Because everytime i fill up when my gas light comes on i never put more than 12.5 to 13.5 gallons in it. I wouldn't think that the light would come on till i had 2-3 gallons left cause that is how it was in my GST. Thanks for any responses out there!

I might be wrong, but i think the AWD's have a divided tank. Theres two sides. So you have a gallon or two on the opposite side and the sensor on the other side would only see that there is two or three gallons on it's side. So in total you would have more than you think. Im not sure if i'm correct. So dont take me for sure. Sorry i couldnt help more.

Yes it is divided for the drive shaft. All 2G cars have a 17gallon gas tank.

is that 17 Gallons total (with reserves)? cuz when i fill up, I've, at most, filled up 13.75 gallons where the needle was right above E. And rarely do I ever fill up more than 12 gallons, normally.

How does it have a 17 gallon tank? The most I've ever put in was a touch over 13 and the needle was right on empty at the time.
