Hi All, stupid newbie here. Taking apart my knuckle assembly to replace bearings. I have been looking at the FSM and it says to use a special service tool to press out the hub from the inner bearing race. Does anyone know where to get DSM special service tools, or should I just go to the machine shop and get them pressed out?

For a wiseman with a FSM , I am looking at page 2-12, disassembly and reassembly for hub and knuckle.

Some pictures would be great, but if anyone knows about the tool required for removal that would be great.
Or prehaps there is a way to get around it.

Its a little more expensive but easier to purchase the entire hub assembly, remove the brakes, the calipers, pull the rotor and undo the 4 bolts from the back and remove it that way. Then put in the new one. No need to get a press for the bearings.

easier unless the axles are rust welded into the hub like mine were. I required new axles as well after a torch was used to cut them up.

That happened to me three times, and I think #4 is starting to go on me. :( Just make sure if a torch is used, you (or whoever does it) doesn't fry the speed sensor, since those are about $100 each.

The hub removal tool sometimes does work, though, if the axle splines aren't seized onto the hub. Some auto parts stores carry them, though ideally you may want to use an air tool to turn the press on the removal tool.

Edit: Be careful not to mushroom the end of the axle.

I usually take off the rotor, caliper, and unbolt the suspension arms from the frame, then swing the axle out, re-tighten arms, beat out hub. Then reverse. Worked great so far.

Just wanted to chime in and say, my driver's side front wheel bearing has play in it. So it looks like I'm off to do another wheel bearing. When will it end?

yeah this seams to be very common with these first gens. I am having a hard time gettin my front rotors off the hub theyre rusted on perm. i broke off jacking screws in one and the other the same but very strangly the rotor broke all around the wheel studs and stayed attatched to the hub. so in my case would it be better to replace the whole hub assembly cause i need wheel bearings too?

I thought i was only having to replace my pads and rotors last spring, but ended up having to beat my rotor of the hub and took a piece of the bearing with. The shop my dad and I were at luckily had a press, but had to jery-rig it to press the rest of the bearing out. And then had to press the rest in. The wierd shap of the press and the hub made it difficult to do, but shit has to get done!!

well to bring some conslusion to my thread I had to go to a machine shop to get the hubs knocked apart. But as my luck uasually is I was in a junk yard I found a set of front knuckles that are in way better shape then mine were. Any after I paied 40 dollars to have 2 hubs and 10 wheel studs knocked apart. I think I am going to put some rust bullet on my suspension stuff from know on. That will keep them from rusting, very important here in michigan. When I reassemble the hubs I will be shure to apply anti-sieze to all contact surfaces, and some grease to the splines.
