I have searched around a little bit and i saw a few threads where someone custom machined an FP30 style turbine housing; or in this case the FP35 style to fit on an HX40, I'm curious what is needed to do this and how much will you have to bore out the housing? i know this is not impossible cause others have done it and there is a thread on dsmtalk about it as well. I cant really find the information needed to get this done though. also, for those of you that have done it, what sort of gains did you see over the BEP housing?:thumb:

Also which turbine housing would be best from FP to go about this venture, the FP35 Style or the T31 turbine housing. sadly i know none of these are bolt on housings to the holset so i know there is some custom fab if i decide to go this route. I'm Just curious what exactally is needed to mate the two together correctly.

Ive done several housings, 35R, T31 (5 bolt) and T4 tangenial garrett housings allto holdHX35's an 40's

there's a good bit of work involved, i've got a few threads up showing what i've done to them to make them fit, just search the turbo forum under my user name and youl'll see em

if there's specifcs you want ot know just ask, it'sjust basic machining and cutinga cuple custom radius tools for the major tominor bladestransition

so other then boring out the housing to fit the turbine corectly it just bolts right up to the CHRA? cause i really do not want to buy a BEP housing. if i were to get the FP30 style would you recomend getting the FP35 style or the T31 style from FP i dont know which would be closest to the HX40pro

Oh no, it's no where near a bolt on affair jut after boring the housing for turbine cleanrance.. in the garrett BB housings there's a ton of extra stuff because of volute position (i won't get into that here) BUt i can say that if you're paying to have it done locally (Or probably any shop that hasn't done it a few times) expect to get raped on a one off project like this.. If I charged retail on he ones i did for guys it would be about 225 dollars just to setup and to the first one with the fitting, bit cuttng and stuff like that... you have to locat the CHRA and machine for it to fit in the turbine housing, and set depths of blade tips and such which is where it gets complicated especailly on an FP30 style housing.. i'd got T3 5 bolt style hands down given the option (or the 4 bolts but i don't like the offset on those) The only think you get lucky as far as "bolt on" is concernedis that the garrett and holsets generally hav the same hole spacing on the hold down rings that keep the CHRA in the turbine housing, so you can get away with using the holset rings with the proper ID when together ad bolting them tothe garrett patterns and hving it ll line up and work

Now that i've done several (up to 7 now not including mine) i've got a system where i can cut people pretty good deals, ut making the first one fromany of the diffeent housng styles took a lot of measuring, setup, test fitting and many light cuts and clearance checks.. YOu also have to set your blade to housing clearance which is very precise, too loose and you loose spoool and too ttight and te blades might hit the housing and ruin the turbo

You have to set general CHRA and turbine depth as well as modify the housing for the CHRA to fit it (aide from the blade fitting cuts) and then once you've gt all those cuts made you have to precisely measure and cut the radius in the housing again keeping clearances just right and getting the shape correct as well

I would say to start with a T31 housing for the easiest conversion over. the ball bearing housings are a LOT of work to fit over to the holset CHRA (and it gets scary close on material thickness, I actaully had the 35R sent out with a batch of stuff from a tool and die shop a friend owns and had an X-ray shot of it to try and get an idea if i could even make it work, thankfully whatevr company it was done by (35r with mitsu flange housing) thy made nice thick housings with material to spare but the volute was off space by a good amount and the entire opening position was changed and the old oipening then blocked off (a hell of a lot more work than a t3/t31 style

I hope thyat's enough info, if you're looking for somethign specific just ask and i'll help ya the best i can.. I only have to draw the line at the info that took me risks and money of "rolling the dice" during the experimental machining and clearancing to get these working properlyu and reliably

here's my dyno graph of this turbo (hx40 compressor 58mm 8 blade) with hx35 turbine, it a .63a/r t31 5 bolt housing floored in 3rd from 3k RPM and revved until 7150rpm, the boost comeson early but in this log it was nasty weather and came on rather late honestly, but once its on it hits HARD and pulls hard to redline with great recovery on the shifts

ANyway....if you love tuirbos and love to machine and have what you need at your disposal about anything can be done as long as the turbine housing areas are all smaller thanm the holsets parts it's pretty easy, it gets nice and difficult if any are larger than the holsets parts because you have to make "sleeves" to reduce the size (i would een trn these away now unless it was going in a magazine or something to get my name out there in abig way)

wow glen, thanks for all the info. definitly seems harder then i thought. if the garrett one is easiest that might be the way to go. the .55 AR BEP isnt gonna cut it. at least the garrett housing might work. i do have one on my SCM6152RS but thats the ball bearing garrett CHRA so might run into the junk you were talking about. i figure ill pick up the BEP for now, but pick up either the T31 FP style or a garrett MITSU flange hot side and futz with it. i dont have a mill so that part would need to be sent out.

Well, depnding on how cheap you can pick up a old t3 5 bolt style houiong for you might be able to come out on top and for cheap.. i'll shoot you a PM
