Well I have had this problem for awhile now and it reallly annoying. First off I checked my battery to see if it was good it that was good. Then today I took my alternator to a alternator and starter service place they said it was fine too. So heres what happnes when I open the door on my car everything starts flashing headlights, taillights, and the dash. Also the car wont even start! it clicks over thats it but I do have remote start on the car also dont know what brand anyways sometimes I can get the car to start with the remote start but hardy ever and the lights still flash when the cars running. Anybody know whats going on?

sounds like an active alarm system. do you have a factory or aftermarket alarm in it?

it's definitely an issue with the aftermarket alarm, it has a start disable relay from the sounds of it. That alarm needs to go.

To get into a little more detail the lights flicker fast off and on till i shut my door and lock it with the press button on the remote start. So just simply take the remote start out?

I'd lose the remote start, unless a shop installed it. If that's the case, let them sort out the issue.

If 5sp, why do you need a remote start-do you leave it it neutral?

I can see with automatics...sorta...

Ya, dispose of that remote nonsense ..... too much asking for trouble when trouble wasn't there in the first place.

Ya its a 5 spd and ya i leave it in neutral. It was already installed when i got the car. I could care less if it was in it though.

It sounds like that remote start unit is going buggy. It could even just be a loose ground to it. If a shop did it and stands behind their work, it should be no trouble to them to fix it. It's always more of a mess trying to figure out how someone else wired shit.

(Gee, remote start for a manual vehicle-most retarded thing I've ever heard of ... but, the big thing is to leave the vehicle in neutral -asking for it to be stolen real quick or the e-brake suddenly letting go or, e-brake cable cut with bolt cutters and goodbye vehicle..)

Ha ya its in the garage anyways. Didnt get time to mess with it today hopefully tommarrow ill get it figured out.

I'm pretty damn sure some moron installed it cause it def dont look it was done the right way:ohdamn:

I never left my car. I also didn't have remote start. The e-brake letting go has nothing to do with having remote start. It still won't be in gear. I don't even know what the bolt cutter comment is supposed to be. There's no security device for letting the e-brake down. If I would have lived on a hill, then I would have left it in gear. If it's really that much of a scary issue, there are such things as chocks. I don't think too many people live their lives in constant fear of criminals. Even so, if they really want it bad enough, nothing is going to stop them.

^^ agreed.

Remote start for a 5spd is good for some people, and an absolutely horrible idea for others.

I got into the habit of never leaving anything in gear when parking it. And if i'm on a hill and i don't trust the parking brake then just cut the wheels towards the curb so if it does let loose then it rolls a whole 10" maybe and the curb stops it.

I really don't like remote starts, but I have to say there are times where it would be nice to have.

OP, I would say just rip out the whole system. If you want it back in there then just get some diagrams of how to properly install it and completely redo it by yourself. If it's not done by you I wouldn't trust it. If you do it then you know what you did or didn't do and how it all works and compfortable you did a good job with it. Leaving it to someone else is not a good idea with a 5 spd (that's why most shops can't legally do it)

Shops don't do it because of liability, and it's also illegal to even have a remote start on a manual car in most places. Not illegal like a criminal act, just if an inspector notices it, they have the right to fail a car's inspection for that. So I don't even get why tint shops exist... I really don't get why car makers can't make a sensor to see if a manual car is in neutral or not. Even have a failsafe on top of that to see if the output shaft of the transmission rotates, in case the thing really is in gear internally but the linkages are broken.

My guess is there's too much room for failure with all the extra sensors. If one part of any of that goes bad then it could cause a lot more to fail.

Automatics have a sensor to detect what gear it's in. They also have speed sensors on both the input and output shafts. This would be no more likely to fail just because it's on a manual transmission.

Alright guys got the alarm system unplugged and no more flickering anymore. Still no start with the clutch pushed in though.

I noticed when i bought my 97 gst automatic it had a sticker on the passenger strut tower that said "WARNING this vehicle is equipped with a DEI remote start system...." Is DEI a factory setup? Its now a 5 speed, and Pretty sure the dei system is still there, I have the antenna for it still, but no longer have the remote for it, i threw it in a car i took to the chrusher ROFL
