93 Eclipse GST : Extreme lack of power and over heating. Still holds boost steady with no leaks. Also burns oil and smokes. The timing is set correct, coils are tested good. The fuel trim on the loggers show 100%. Need help figuring out whats wrong with it. :hmm:

New parts list:

Fuel Pump
Knock Sensor
NGK Plugs
Plug Wires

I didnt know the correct way to post a video on here. This is a 1st and 2nd gear, pedal to the floor test drive. Heres the video.YouTube - Dewaynes Eclipse Problem.mpg

Ok frist check the turbo for shaft play. second check the seals for injectors rail and head. and regulator. you should not smell gas. the smoke could be from the turbo could be lots of play and bad seals. also are you venting ? if so dont untill you go speed density. also do a boost leak test

There are no boost leaks, injector seals or anything else are leaking. The smell of gas is coming from inside the valve cover. My blow off valve is recirculated. the turbo has a decent amount of side to side play but no in and out. Whatever is causing my power loss is causing overheating as well. The engine was completely rebuilt less than 2 months ago. I was able to drive it perfectly for 2 weeks before it just started bogging down, popping and backfiring through the intake, smoking and overheating. Pedal to the floor like on the video at any rpm in any gear is struggling. it will not make it up a hill at all. I'm stumped.

Will from my experience it was my head gasket. My second gear wasn't as bad as yours but have you done a compression test yet! My car overheats time to time and when temp is high theres no power. But im stumped on the other diagnosis.

The engine hasn't been run long enough since the build to break in let alone have a blown head gasket. dosn't start smoking and overheating until after i attempt to drive it a block away. The rpms struggle to climb and dnever seem to get above 3-35k

Overheating, could be lots of things check for compression, loss of power, if you havent checked that do it, regardless of fresh rebuild, there could be a problem there especially if it wasnt done correctely. I learned never to rule out anything, my head gasket blew with less than 2 months on it. not sure why but its solved now.

compression test will tell you alot would be a good starting point. the only other thing i could think of is lack of fuel. i doubt that tho. have you ben changing your oil since the rebuild?. alot more gas goes into the oil untill the rings break in good luck

I can't understand how it could be the head gasket, I only got to drive it for two weeks and I babied the hell out of it. All of this seemed to happen overnight. 1 day running perfectly and the next like shit. I'll do a compression test on it this evening after work to see what's up with that.

I thought the same thing when I had the same problem as you and it turned out to be the head gasket. I never knew you had to check warpage on the head. Shaved the head, new gasket, and now she runs like a dream.

I had something unexpected come up so it took me a couple days to get around to it. The compression checked out good starting with #1-168, #2-170, #3-165, #4-170. The brand new spark plugs I installed less than 2 weeks ago are solid black and have only been driven on 3 times for around 15 minutes each go. I need some more ideas please.

Did you check for boost leaks? im still with a bad turbo or a boost leak to make it sound like that in the video. stock fpr? only other thing that could keep it from building boost is eaither bad turbo boost leak or no fuel.....from your compression test it sounds like your headgasket it fine im also wondering from the smoke are you buring oil? maybe bad val seals cauing the smoke....

Speaking of constipation... is your exhaust catted? clogged maybe?

so lets cover the basics. Your turbo likely wouldn't be boosting if you had a major exhaust restriction. But it should be checked (ie if you have an aftermarket down pipe that has internally braided flex section that could partially block it. also the cat. But what you need to do is check spark, check fuel, check compression. You checked compression. Check cam timing (make sure they are properly aligned), check spark intensity at the wire, check air fuel ratios, check tdc's cause the cel looks like it is on so I would actually start there. back to basics boys. Check for boost leaks, or if you have link or something, make sure your map didnt drop out.

Thats not a cel, that is the anti lock brake light you see on in the video. Everything is pretty much stock except for the fuel pump and engine internals. Stock downpipe and still using a cat. I've performed boost leak after boost leak and have found nothing. The fuel trims on the logger indicate 100% The spark though is yellow as hell. I've always been used to seeing a blue spark on other vehicles. All timing is dead set, has been checked by several other people besides myself. I don't have link.

I think its a clogged CAT.. Did you install a aftermarket fuel pump via walbro 190 or 255? if so you would need a new fuel pressure reg to manage your fuel press. If you installed a HP fuel pump without the regulator you have ruined the cat because of a flood of fuel. The blue smoke is probably coming from your guides in the cylinder head. After you rebuild did you have a hard time starting the car? did you put some type of cam lube on all the valve train components?

I installed a wally 190 only after it had started doing this. I thought that my fuel pump went out on me. The car started and ran perfectly for two or three weeks before this. I don't believe the head gasket has anything to do with it. It also dosn't start smoking until I drive it for a second and get the turbo spooling, but the turbo has recently been rebuilt. Also, I always thought you could safely run a 190 without an adjustable fuel regulator.

Who tuned your car? I see that you are using the Safc for tuning. Who ever tuned the car, were they knowledgeable about the SAFC? I still think the Cat is clogged. If you can, try disconnecting the cat and driving the car with a open exhaust. If it still does the same thing its either mechanical or a programming issues... In your video, it seemed like your were dragging 2 SUVs behind you. The Rpms were creeping up very slow. Before your engine rebuild, was the car running 100%? Did you program the ecu before or after the rebuild?

Unbolt the exhaust at the DP and get back to us after a test drive.
