I am pulling my turbo so decided to pull the exhaust manifold to take a closer look since there were 3-4 studs that were missing/snapped etc.

I was wondering what the process is as far as removing replacing exhaust manifold studs. In some cases the threads on the inside of the hole have come out (not sure what you call them)( I thought that threads were on the bolt itself but the inside of the hole has threads too I guess).

In one case the thread is not snapped flush in the head but not further in.

I see that the previous owner compensated by putting 4 exhaust manifold gaskets (I guess there is only supposed to be one).

Tempted to put it back together and put the 4 manifold gaskets on then call a day but since I have it apart I am wondering if this is doable without pulling the head.

Thank you

Properly drill the existing studs out and use a bolt extractor and get them out of there. Putting 4 gaskets on (a huge no) is bound to create an exhaust leak. Always best to do it properly that way it benefits you down the road.

Best way would be an extractor as menitiond id start sprayin some type of penetrating oil on them an if that dont work looks like youll need a good tap

Thanks, never used an extractor before. Will that work for studs that are FAR in the head? I can't even see one of them. All of this can be done without pulling the head?

Harbor Freight an ok place to get the extractors from?

Will probably watch some youtube to try and learn how to do the job.

Thanks

ive tried extractors some work, far in the head with the head on possible, i never had one break off far inside, just half of it at the surface, pita sometimes to get them out.
