Reading on evolutionm.net i found a thread where they have rewired a connector to migrate an EVO 8 ECU into a 1G DSM. Now its in the 2G and i know some of the 1G guys on here have to be involved in this. Is this considered to be sucessfully completed for us meaning we can dump DSMlink or any other chip type mod for tuning our applications. I know you all are up to speed on the tuning ability of the EVO's and the WRX/STi's. Where you can reflash the EPROM that is on their native ECU. No need to replace the ECU with a stand alone or run a piggy back system. You can simply connect directly to the ECU pull off your ROM with ECUflash, then import your .BIN file into Enginuity and then adjust your map. I know all this info is a few months old now. I have used these programs for years tuning subies and a few EVO's. I will do a backflip off my roof if this truly comes to fruition. Has anyone on here been involved with this? Seems its a company out of Texas that is creating the interconnect from our wiring harness to the EVO ECU. If I can get the necessary plugs for both ends. I will get an EVO ECU and build the interconnect. I will donate my ECU to get this working. I want this bad!

Here is a link to the thread. Sry mods, not trying to publish another site here just linking to a resource of information.

Interested in this for sure. I need a new ECU for mine and I want to get tuning software at the same time.

That's what I'm doin as we speak. I got my evo 8 ECU and I'm starting to make the harness now. Has any one else even considered this? I'm doing this cause I want to try something new. Let's hope it works like I hope it will

You can put a H8 ECU (98 & 99) and they are re programmable and there is a guy on the forums Ceddy who is actually making his own tuning software which seems to be as good as if not better then Link. Not quite sure if its all done yet but you can research it under Ceddy mod in the forums

I plan on doing this with my 1g over the winter. Do you know what the company in TX is that is making the harnesses?

Also, you will need an Evo knock sensor as well.

This seems like it will be a very nice alternative to Link, as you can pick up an IIIV ecu for ~$100, tuning cable for another $100, wire it in yourself, and have an awesome tuning device.

You would also get the cool features like NLTS, speed density, boost control vs mph, phantom knock, nitrous control, etc.

I think tunerpro and an ostrich is a more proven path, with a wealth of knowledge of the e931 image on the dsm-ecu yahoo group. Although the evo8 ecu should be better in the long run because of the ability to run extended maps with better definition.

Their a few people running Evo8 and 9 ecus in 1Gs, older Mirages, and Evo1-3s.

You need to build a harness adapter because of the 1G 3 plug versus the Evo8 4 plug. And there are a few small differences; like for NLTS, the DSMs ground the clutch switch while the Evos apply +12v.

If you are use to EcuFlash for tuning Evos or Subarus, its very easy to switch over.

The Evo ecus are superior technology wise, they are 10+ years newer, and are much smoother.

How do they get around the key immobilizer or does it matter. Thats the only problem if it is that I see. very intrested in this :hellyeah:

This is excatly why I want to do this. The EVO ecu is MUCH MUCH better technology and also you have a full feature set of ways to adjust your map. And as for tunerpro or enginuity. Enginuity is a VERY VERY proven path. It hasnt been used in the states for much more than 5 years. But in other countries this has been the method of choice since tuning subies has be done. Check this link out. ecuexplorer - Project Hosting on Google Code The evolution of this software has been incrediable. With hundreds of people at the same time testing and contributing to the project. Colby Boles and Calvin Cestari were developing the two parts of the software that eventually were married together into what the ECUexplorer project has become. openecu.org has plenty of threads and an extended history you can read. This community also has members that will custom make your maps for you. You provide your mods and car type, then they will proved an "off the shelf map" that you can then datalog and ofcourse tweak. Since your tune is very much affected by barometric pressure every users tune will be different just depending on where you live. Not to mention if you want to get into mechanical engineering side of things and get down to how your engine has worn, etc... EVERY car is different. This is why i hate off the shelf maps. Like Cobb tuning. They have great software but you have to re-tune their off the shelf tunes blow goat nads. Datalog everyday.. tweak at lunch datalog home. Tweak at home, datalog the next am to work, tweak at lunch, etc.. This is what i do everyday. As the temp changes your tune changes.. So everyday my car is running at peak performance. This is why I love the software so much. And if I can do this with my new DSM like i did the STI. Oh man.. Also they have excel pre-built files that allow you to import your datalog and it will draw a graph overlay for you. I can go on and on and on about this.. I am going to begin to work on a harness now as well. I have 4k to invest in building my car. I believe the EVO EUC will be the best bang for the buck way to go. Of course if you have tons fo cash full stand alone AEM or something like that is always better.

Ceddy, what are the pros and cons of using the 2G H8 ECU vs the EVO ECU on a 1G? It seems like the EVO ECU-to-2G guys have been having a few issues with the swap. I don't see many issues at all with a 2G-to-1G ECU swap, considering everything you can disable in the periphery bits, and the fact there is no immobilizer. Just use the 2G knock sensor. What about the coolant sensor? I'll have to look up Hal's old 2G-to-1G info from years ago, before there was a 1G DSMLink.

The Pros of using the Evo ecus is they have more code mods and coders and a larger user base, the 2G H8s are still relatively new, but should catch up very soon, once more people get on board.

A lot the 2G hardware is closer to the Evo then the 1Gs. Basically all the 2G and Evo hardware is compatible.

I'm not sure of the 1G hardware differences, but think only a few inexpensive ones need to be replaced. Like you said the Coolant Sensor, I think the TPS also.

The Evos need to run a Euro rom or they will throw a CAM/Crank CEL with the 1G CAS, the 2G H8s run the 1G CAS perfectly in stock form.

I really like the Hitachi ecu in the H8s and Evo ecus, I can notice a difference between my 95 and 98 ecus. Everything is a lot smoother, don't know it is from better drivers, faster cpu, or just newer technology.

Key immobilizer I would think is disabled on the board in the ecu, either by jumping it or disabling the circuit. If its an external circuit, which is most likely the case, then it would be easy.

You change a 1 to a 0 in EcuFlash.

Seriously. That's it. :rocks:

I would be very interested in this, could someone do a write up for dummys in laymans terms or any more advice? It would be awesome if this can be done successfully.

True a "EVO III Swap for Dummies" write-up would be freakin awesome

Meant "EVO VIII ECU Swap for Dummies"

I'm setting up a patch harness for the 92'.

I'm not sure what is going to happen to the series 1 AEM EMS systems. Also EVOscan has some features that AEMlog does not. i.e. "Map Trace" :)

Here's this as a starter http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-tuning-ecu/347103-evo-8-ecu-2g-your-visual-guide.html
It has Evo ECU pinouts. You'll have to compare those to the 1g pinouts.
Your swap won't be as easy as swapping pins, but it isn't impossible.

Like it has been mentioned, you will need a patch harness to go from the 2 plug setup to 3 plug ecu.

ugh..what, that just went right over my head, Could someone make a harness or whatever for me, I'd be willing to pay for this, I can't believe someone more electrical savy hasn't tried to market such a product. Just plug and play would be awesome.
