Reading on evolutionm.net i found a thread where they have rewired a connector to migrate an EVO 8 ECU into a 1G DSM. Now its in the 2G and i know some of the 1G guys on here have to be involved in this. Is this considered to be sucessfully completed for us meaning we can dump DSMlink or any other chip type mod for tuning our applications. I know you all are up to speed on the tuning ability of the EVO's and the WRX/STi's. Where you can reflash the EPROM that is on their native ECU. No need to replace the ECU with a stand alone or run a piggy back system. You can simply connect directly to the ECU pull off your ROM with ECUflash, then import your .BIN file into Enginuity and then adjust your map. I know all this info is a few months old now. I have used these programs for years tuning subies and a few EVO's. I will do a backflip off my roof if this truly comes to fruition. Has anyone on here been involved with this? Seems its a company out of Texas that is creating the interconnect from our wiring harness to the EVO ECU. If I can get the necessary plugs for both ends. I will get an EVO ECU and build the interconnect. I will donate my ECU to get this working. I want this bad!

Here is a link to the thread. Sry mods, not trying to publish another site here just linking to a resource of information.

I think tunerpro and an ostrich is a more proven path, with a wealth of knowledge of the e931 image on the dsm-ecu yahoo group. Although the evo8 ecu should be better in the long run because of the ability to run extended maps with better definition.

I agree and you can get everything including logger and socketing for most likely less than just the E8 ecu.
The main thing I like about the E8 ecu though, is the maps go past 10k

I'm making mine today. I'm on the way to the junk yard to get a 95-2005 4cyl mitisu ecu harness plug. I may start making them for other people if there is a demand for them. Its so easy to do. Don't forget the white reflash pug too. O just add the pin to your tactrix cable. I have the open port 1.3 obd2 cable

this stuff is insane i first of all would like to thank ceddy for what he knows about the ecus and what he's done. seriously he's going to give the dsm guys who don't have alot of money a better car!

it's great that the dsm's aren't limited to just the link.

Just go to this link Evo8 ECU in a 1G DSM in the works! - Page 11 - evolutionm.net. it talks about everything you need to know very simple.

Yeah thanks for the link, but if you read the thread its in my very first post.. =) Today I picked up Several ECU wiring harness from junk yards to plug into the EVO ecu. I also got a few DSM ecu circut boards to pull off the male end to soder the connectors to. I should be able to make 3 more harnesses that you will plug into your DSM wiring harnes and the other end into the EVO viii ECU. Plug and pray. opps i ment plug and play. hahah

I will be making a few of these in the next week or so. If I can get an Idea of how many people would want just the harness made then I probably as time permits make some for you guys. Now you will still need to buy yourself an tactrix cable from Colby, its na openport. I have the older version 1.3 which is great, but the new openport 2.0 you can get it with EVOscan also. Talk about a perfect marriage with your new EVO 8 ECU. Im very excited. Now i just need to rebuild my motor. Anyone in the Tampa bay area have a machine shop so that I can do some professional port polish work on my head. I am going to install some BC 272's. With 2G lifters. And im trying to decide on which springs to use. Im onpn to other options. Looks liek the other day my CAS began to blow all the oil out the bottom of the seal and now my intake cam rattles around. Check out all the oil in my potobucket account. You can see hwo bad it was. I was driving nice and smooth. Got into boost and left off , still smooth at this point, them all of a sudden the rattle started. I pulled off th road and it died. Look at these pics..

Is there a particular model EVO 8 ecu you that is need or are all the ECU's the same

This is a great subject. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know all the pros and cons of this?

any more info would be appreciated.

What do you want to know?

It controls the car, is flashable and offers some features such as:
NLTS
launch control
bigmaps
complete fuel/timing control
valet mode
CEL control
CEL on knock
speed density conversion
phantom knock control
alternate maps
ecu based boost control
RPM/Gear dependent boost control
super quick logging

Definitely a good system. It has a somewhat steep learning curve but once you understand it it is a fairly easy system to control.

Mork do you think it's possible to control a Cyclone manifold runners with an Evo ecu? I need to do some more homework on the ecu set-up,just curious since you have one in your car.

I haven't had a chance to really explore the tuning area yet being as I've been working on finishing my car for a few years now. So that being said i haven't bought any tuning software or an eprom. I noticed a few people mention Dsmlink in here and saying that this could be a better/alternative route to go with.

What would you guys recommend? When it came down to it, i was planning to have someone help me and showing me how do it, or pay someone to do it for me. Would going the Evo ECU route save me a little money and be just as good if not better than using Dsmlink since I already know little about tuning anyways?

sure i guess it would be possible, unfortunately i don't think i have seen to many other accessories have been looked into yet on the EVO8 ecu. things like the FPR solenoid and purge solenoid controllers would come in handy but not to many people have looked into finding the maps for them yet, so changing how they operate is kind of a no go..... however there is one alternative that might work but i don't know if it would work exactly as you want it to. the EVO8 ecu has a system setup that runs the fuel pump trough a resistor under cruse and light load them under boost bypasses the resistor and runs full bat power to the pump. this hole setup is controlled by a relay via the ECU, so i guess a creative person could figure out hot to get it to control the cyclone manifold if you wire it to a vacuum solenoid. problem is you wont have any control over when exactly it comes on.... i have asked a couple of times if someone on EvoM could look into finding the map so that could be adjusted in ecu flash but i don't think anyone has started looking for it yet. now that i think about it you could probably make use of the inter cooler sprayer circuit. there is plenty of adjust-ability in ecu flash for that.

that all depends on who you ask.... in the long run yes an EVO8 ecu Will cost you less than ECMlink.... is it better.... i think so, mostly because there seems to be a lot more people doing research into finding out what can be done with the ecu then the crew over at ECMlink, and it is a whole lot newer then the 95 ecu. but you don't get a dedicated crew that you can call for support if you have a problem or the dedicated forum to that system and only that system. with ECU flash you have to do a little bit of looking to find an answer or hope some one with the correct answer happens to look at your question. a little more legwork but worth it IMO

Is it cheaper than a dsmlink? Yes.
Is it better than a dsmlink? Today, no. DSMlink is more capable out of the box with the ability to control some of the outputs (EGR solenoid, FPR solenoid, etc). The Evo ECU has the big maps right now, which is very nice to have. The hardware on the evo ECU is better than the dsm ecu, with a couple of more outputs, none of which can be really controlled like the dsmlink as of today. Given enough time and development the evo ecu has more capable hardware.

DSMlink is also way easier to use, and will most likely always be easier to use.

For the majority of us who is honestly going to tune past 9k like DSMLink does??? It is a great idea and can be cheap but I think all the wizards that dsmlink has it won't compete for a PnP tuning devise..

From the looks of this set-up it's more hands-on than Link. I've done alot of studying the various tuning options available to us and like most was going to buy Link..until I saw this. It might turn a lot of people off because of the fact that there is no predefined directions or a big FAQ for it,but for the people who love to hack this looks to be great! And I am def one of those types haha bring it on:hellyeah:

i havent done much research on the evo8 ecu.. I just understand that people have went from an evo8 ecu to a 95 eprom to run dsmlink... Idk.. Alot of the fast guys around me rock link and if any of you could have bought dsmlink for what i payed Im sure you would do it LOL.. i spent 280 for link and already had an eprom so I socketed it myself... So that was the option I had and I took it..

Different strokes for different folks.

Those of us who have used both EcuFlash and ECMLink extensively understand where the extra money is going: the client software is top-notch (and a well-integrated experience, as opposed to EcuFlash + Evoscan + excel + etc), the support forum is almost enough of a reason to buy it by itself, and on that forum, you have direct access to Tom and Dave for questions and feedback, and the quality of their customer service is a rarity in this business.

The Evo ECUs are very much a "scratch your own itch" style of development; we can do the stuff we can with them because someone was interested enough to make it happen. That means, though, that quality of the documentation of how to reproduce those results is vastly different, and scattered everywhere (we're getting better, but it's still a valid complaint). Similarly, the quality of the end-user software you use scales from EcuFlash at the refined end, all the way down through the live mapping clients at the low end: different developers, different goals, and a pretty disconnected user experience. (And we're not getting any closer to this situation improving, sadly.)

That works out fine for someone like me. I'm less concerned about the "user experience", since I'm not a typical user; I'm comfortable hacking on SH code, writing my own logger, and breadboarding stuff.

But for someone who just wants to get their car running well, that user experience is worth far more than what Tom and Dave are charging, IMHO.

Different goals: I like to play with ECUs. The next guy just needs a tool to get the job done.

Logic said everything that I wanted to say for me so all that I can say is that I agree with him completely.

Flashable ecus definitely compete with ECMlink but they are not a replacement. They are entirely different products and act completely differently. ECMlink is a professional product with actual professional support and a user interface and experience designed to limit the possibility of really messing up your car and to help you get a great tune even if the tuner is only of mediocre quality. Flashable ecus are capable of producing the same results as ECMlink and are probably quite a bit easier to add new functionality but there are literally no safeguards and there is no direct support. Even the professional products used with flashable ecus are at best of passable quality. For example Evoscan is an absolutely awesome logger that continually has really cool new features which make it easier to tune your car every day. However Evoscan is plagued with functionality issues because the main focus of its development is on features and not stability. ECMlink is also innovative but I would never expect it to be unstable or only work with certain hardware because it is a highly professional product and quite frankly the price reflects it which is not an entirely bad thing.

yes people have moved away from the EVO8 ecu. But dont forget that a lot of those using the DSMlink ECU in their EVO8 probably did so well before ECUflash and the Support for the EVO8 ecu got to where it has today. but on the same note if someone was running their DSM with an EVO8 ecu and have cense moved away from it have probably done so for personal reasons. Whether they preferred the support or the ease of making adjustments or whatever.

as for a "How To" for the 1G guys i am sure it is on the way, granted it won’t be as easy as us 2G people but the info is already out there you just need to be patient.... or try to make since of what is out there already
