Ok, I know at least a couple of guys on here don't run catalytic converters on there dsms (and they are their main rides too). Is this actually common practice among the dsm community ? Everyone knows there is definitely some horse power gains in doing this, but exactly how easy is it to get caught running without a cat, and what happens if you DO get caught? If you run without a cat, will your exhaust become defeaning? I would like some opinions on if this is a good idea or not for somone's daily ride (especially from those in this forum who actually have daily ride dsms with NO cat).

I dont have the link, but there is a company that makes exhaust "cutouts". Normally your exhaust flows through your cat, but with this system you just flip a switch or whatever and your exhaust piping opens up before your cat.

i believe you're thinking of Q-tech, not sure of their website, but i'm pretty sure that's the company name.

if you got electric cutouts, you could just open them whenever and have open exhaust or whatever its called, right?
i know itll be loud, i know someone who has an 11 second mustang who has them, but what would it sound like on a DSM? would it sound sh!tty or not? dont think ive ever heard cutouts on a 4 cylinder.

also, what kind of gains should i expect to see with the cutouts open?

where do the cutouts go? one page i saw said they welded put them on a test pipe, you can have them without a test pipe right? if so, where would it go? i really dont know much about this as you can probably see.

Im running the apex-i downpipe with n1 exhaust, its perfect and I love it! Why get cuttouts? Too much hassle, get the apex-i downpipe you will feel the difference and wont feel or see the need to get cuttouts. And I was wondering myself if they do smog tests here in Texas, my inspection was due in September. Its already January!!! :shhh:

im thinkin they do but im really not sure.
last year, well i guess two years ago, my inspection was like 6 months overdue in my BMW. i guess the cops dont really check that when they run your plates, or they just dont care.

where in tx are you from?

I just got done putting my stock exhaust back on this morning. I was running just a downpipe, hell of a lot of fun compared to the stock piping. After awhile it got annoying, being so loud and all.. now my car sounds like a damn geo metro. :thumb:

yea where I am there is no emission testing but still people check under your car for the cat though but hey I inspect car for a living so I ain't complaining

they dont check under the car for a cat here, atleast they didnt use a lift. maybe they only do it if theres certain smog numbers that would make them think there isnt a cat on. i dunno.

i once went to a muffler shop and they told me if you get caught without a cat you can get fine up to 1,000 dollars and now you can get ur car towed. this is in cali
but im not sure...

I've run without a cat for 2 years here in Alabama! Hell, a noted muffler shop even made it for me! When I roll up on the cops at a light they just throttle out right along with me! Gotta love no emissions testing down here... not to mention that Bama is the home of the monster truck! Driving WITH a cat is a ticketable offense.
