so this guy I buy a lot of parts from showed me a muffler that he wants to trade to me that looks very odd. He says its from an EVO 3, but i can't find any pics of it online (unfortunately i did not take a pic of it) it looks like a pretty normal can muffler but on one side it has like an arm coming from it that widens into something that resembles a resonator that ends about five inches short of the end of the tip of the can. Its on there stock, not jimmy rigged i can tell that much. the picture im posting is VERY badly photo shopped to give you an idea of what im trying to describe. He said its stock but i don't know. if you know what im talking about im interested to know what it sounds like, like if its loud or not, and what the point of the arm thinger is. Thanx to anyone if they have any clue about what it is

Sounds like a method of volume control. There was recently a thread in the fabrication section (I think?) talking about custom exhausts and how you can control sound with little to no detriment to flow. Dyno results included.

If I understand your description right, it sounds like the "arm" is a resinator of sorts. Intake pipes have them as well on a lot of cars to quiet the sound down by allowing the air noise to be quieted in a seperate chamber. I know there are exhaust systems that use this same concept to help quiet it down.

As far as coming from an Evo3, I couldn't answer that.

Why do you want that muffler and/or what is being traded for it?

I'm putting a full exhaust on my car and i am trying to find nice muffler that doesn't quiet it down too much, doesn't reduce performance and also doesn't sound too ricey. and i thought that one might be an option, im trading him my cat when i take it off for that muffler and a front strut tower sway bar. but from the sounds of what you guys are saying it will be too quiet...

If you do get rid of your cat, take it to salvage and get money for it. I've heard of people getting $100 or so for cat converters. Look into getting a Magnaflow muffler
