Every Part To Build A 6 Bolt Block?

I just picked up a bare 6 bolt block, a 6 bolt crank, and a set of stock rods and pistons. The block has very minimal surface rust but the crank is clean. What do I need to have done to the block, crank, Rods, and pistons? Also what other parts are needed to build up a bottom end?
My list of stuff needed so far is:
Bearings
Main Caps
Oil Pump
Water Pump
Flywheel
Rear Main Seal
Oil Pan
Front Case
Pulleys
Oil Pickup Tube
Dipstick
Crankshaft Position Sensor

What am I missing?

Take the block, rods and pistons to the machine shop. Have the block cleaned and dipped to check for cracks. They will also check the deck for any warping. Get the bores checked out along with the pistons and rods, if all checks out without needing more then a hone then all I have to add is new rings on the pistons, and freeze plugs

If they have to deck the head any make sure you get the right thickness head gasket otherwise.

Edit, sorry I forgot to add, have the crank checked out too! It isn't much more and its better to be safe than assume its ok. If by any chance they say it needs to be turned you're better off buying a new one. Turned cranks are more prone to bearing failure.

^ In addition, having a crank polished and buying a new crank can sometimes run close in price, so like he said, a new would be the better choice.

Also missing the oil squirters if you're planning to use them.

If you don't have the main caps that came with that block from the factory, it's pretty much a boat anchor. Paying for the machine work to mate another set of caps to the block will cost more than another block, with the main caps.

For the crank, make sure to have the oil galley balls pulled so the crank can be properly cleaned.

Now depending on what you want for stock parts, and what aftermarket parts, your parts list will vary.


Oil pump= front case

How about the oil pump pick up screen and oil pan?

Bearings will depend on what is done to the crank, Polish = STD, ground = oversized

Stock rods can be had in the classifieds, or from a supporting vendor.

Flywheel, stock? or aftermarket?

Dipstick tube, new= Dealer

The rear main seal should come in the gasket set, or did you mean the seal plate?

Well, that sucks. Ill look around and see what I can get as far as another block.

I plan on building this as a budget rebuild engine so I can swap it in and do a solid rebuild on my stock engine.

Why wouldn't you just build a junk yard motor for power? What you want to do will cost you more money for nothing really. Just build another engine then swap it and save your stock one for a back up.

I hate it when I see a head or block sold without the caps. Pretty much makes it worthless without them. Then if you have some from another core then it will need align honed. More bucks than its worth.

Take that block and make a cool coffee table out of it or end table. Some day it might be worth spending the money to make it a block again.

Sad story about this subject. My buddy back from high school/ first year out of high school had a 2002 civic si, k20a3 motor. He had it sleeved, eagle rods, pistons, crank, greddy turbo kit, had hondata stand alone,$10,500 later. He saved every penny he could for this setup from his sophmore year working part time, till after graduation.

507 miles.... knock knock....

A shop here built the motor, the main caps weren't torqued to spec and he spun the mains 7 miles after his "recommended" break in period. Shop told him to shove it, they aren't around anymore.

The complete motor from turbo, manifolds, injectors, intake with filter, a shortened fmic setup with the bov is now under 3/4" of 3'x5' glass in his living room.... its the $10,000 table.

Just thought that was funny, and I've had some Kentucky cough syrup, so you all get to read this...
