eprom convert your own ecu?

so i've got a 90 gsx with a non-eprom...my question, is there anyway to convert your ecu to an eprom by your self? i know that dsmchips.com and ecmlink offer a conversion but i dont have money for them to do it and i can't have the car down while i send out the ecu.

any help is appriciated.
any guidance to someone that will do it cheaper then ecmlink is better

Honestly, I would send it in. You mess up one thing soldering on that board and you could be looking at a finding a new ECU. Not to mention, they'll be replacing capacitors for you too which should be done as well.

It's a very quick turn around time going through ECMLink.

To completely answer the question, yes you could. It is not difficult at all if you have the right tools and knowledge. Honestly, if you have to ask then your best bet is to listen to LiQUiDx and have the guys at ECM Tuning do it for you.

Just becuase he asked does not meen he can't do it. Thats what these forums are for. Your saying that anyone who asks how to do something is not able to do it once they have the knowledge?

i mean i have the knowledge and patientce to do it but money is the issue. that and i asked because i didn't see any post about doing it yourself so i decided to ask. but your right doing it yourself is very risky. so ill just save up and send it out.

non eprom ecu's are a dime a dozen. I would get one from the junk yard and mess around with it. That is if you want to give it a try.

There are two aspects to converting a non-EPROM to EPROM. One is the physical process of removing the CPU chip from the board and attaching something in it's place. The other is designing and building the hardware that replaces the CPU. If you assume your time is worth something you won't be able do either cheaper than what ECUTuning charges unless you're making and doing lots of them.

This isn't just an issue of changing some parts, you have to reimplement the port expander used to interface the external devices to the multiplexed buses on the CPU and couple that to the existing board.

If you don't happen to know how the ECU works you'll be hard pressed to correctly implement the the port expander functionality. The conversion board they created uses a CPLD to provide those functions.

I'm saying it is possible, but without proper tools and knowledge I wouldn't attempt it if I were him. Have you ever had to re-run traces and through-holes because someone messed them up? Not fun...
