Engine Swap now won't turn locked up?

My car had a bad cylinder with low compression. I found a 1992 tsi awd parts car. I pulled the motor on that car which was an automatic. Swapped everything over - mine is a manual trans - and installed it into my car. Now when I try to turn it over by hand on the crank bolt clockwise, it only turns over a little bit then locks up solid and won't let you turn it any further. I am stumped! Had the flywheel resurfaced, swapped it over to the good motor, new clutch kit including oem pilot bearing. I know the motor from the 92 was good because I drove the car off of the trailer when I pulled it home. It started and ran just fine. I didn't mess with the timing at all - left everything on that side of the motor alone. Just swapped transmissions since it was an auto and mine is a stick.

Any suggestions??? Thanks -

I see in the pic that the bushing isnt removed from the back of the crank(where the flywheel bolts to). These are needed in the auto, but cannot be used in the 5 speed transmissions

I just finished doing this and had to re install the bushing because i'm putting the motor back into an automatic car, and the crank i used was from a 5 speed car. It actually looks like part of the crankshaft, but it can be removed with a little persuasive action. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

correct. i used some good ol' PB Blaster and mine actually came out when i had to remove it. it will be tight though, its pressed in, not threaded or anything.

Wow! What a PITA that was!!! But it's all over finally....got the trans out, fought with that pos bushing but I finally won that fight and got it removed! Put everything back together and got it fired up this evening before calling it a day. Still need to replace the fluid in the trans and x-fer case other than that I should be back in business.

Thanks for all of the replies and helping me get this out! Hopefully this thread can help someone else out down the road if there are any other quetions. Here are the 2 differences - the picture on top shows the Automatic Pilot bushing still installed in the center of the crank bolts. The bottom picture shows what a Manual Trans should look like with the bushing removed.

Wishing I had some way to photo shop on my iphone when I posted. LOL

Pics would have helped too. I sold my turbo car :(

Glad you finally figured out what we were talking about! You might give some input on that clutch you bought. The lip around the fingers still looks odd to me! If it works and its cheap thats always up a DSMers alley!

Sorry for Replying to a old thread but I just wanted to say I broke off three brand new OEM flywheel bolts into my crank shaft AND have cracks all along the center of my flywheel becuase I never knew about this crank bushing.... I have a 5 speed 4g63 that went for 20k before the flywheel bolts broke, don't know why your engine was locking up though, mine ran with the pilot bearing.
