first off, sorry i don't have capital letters my keyboard is broken. i bought my 96 talon tsi awd about 6 months ago maybe a little less. it has about 125000 miles and ran good everything was great. about middle of winter the dipstick started blowing out and putting oil everywhere so i got a little clip for my dipstick and i cleaned the little filter that was on where my pcv was. then some oil came out of my cap but i found that one of the gaskets on the cap was out of place when i put it back on right it fixed that. this all happened over a few weeks and during that time i lost maybe a quart of oil out of the 3-4 times it happened.

i checked it almost every day and after i fixed the cap nothing had happened for about a week and i was still checking it quite a bit. after that week i let it go for maybe a week and all of a sudden going down the highway after driving for about 15 minutes it cut out a little and tacked a little and it was locked up. this all happened in less then a minute.

that was about 2 weeks ago and i was extremely mad and my mom towed it to a mechanic who of coarse told her it was locked up. i kind of knew what had happened because i hadn't checked the oil for that week because i had a lot going on in school. so i opened the oil cap and there was some white smoke, not a lot but some. i tried to start the car but it wont even turn over. no signs of oil in the engine bay really except i seen the coupler on the turbo had a light spray of oil on it, not sure where from.

i haven't really looked at it yet because I've been stressed with school but now i'm on spring break. the mechanic said there was no oil at all really. so my question basically is, best case scenario would i be best getting a new engine. do i have any hope whatsoever. I'm a poor little boy who is sitting at home during spring break, LOL, i need some help here.

When you blow a motor its good when it locks up. That way usuall all components are in good shape, except the rod or rods that welded itself to the crank. My oil drained out from a faulty oil pressure gauge and it seized up on me. I did a full rebuild and all I needed to replace was one rod.

so would i be better off getting a rebuilt engine or rebuilding the engine. i have never actually rebuilt an engine, I'm only 18 and I've went though a year and a half of automotive vocational class but i need to have this engine kind of soon and i don't exactly trust myself. i would assume if the engine needs to be completely rebuilt it would be just as cheap to buy a rebuilt.

i have always thought i would wait to do something like rebuilding my own engine when i had another car and some money. i worked on my old 92 eclipse quite a bit before i sold it but nothing as major as an engine rebuild.

also, if i did get a rebuilt engine how hard would is it to do a 7 bolt to 6 bolt swap. i would imagine its something i could do with the link on vfaq. the link doesn't work but i know i found the same page somewhere else one day and it didn't look extremely difficult, but i guess you have no clue until you do it. although i know the compression ratio of the 6 bolt is less so how much power will i be losing, i see so many people are doing this but i also know you can put 2g pistons in the 1g. well i guess i have a lot of decisions and of coarse i definitively need to find some money

do you know where that company ships out of flatblackandy, i couldn't find it on the site. i did see a number with an area code of 717 which is Pennsylvania, so i'm assuming thats where but not sure. I'm from Indiana and i know shipping cost will be a pretty good part of the price of an engine. thanks for all the help

How much oil was left in the engine after it locked up? Have you tried turning the motor over by the crank pulley with a wrench to make sure it is locked up? Mine locked up and I am currently building my engine with eagle rods and wiseco pistons. But after mine was locked up I had turn the crank pulley and broke it loose. My cylinder walls were not too bad and I probably could have filled it back up with oil and could have ran it but the rings would need to be replaced. Mine has 180,000 miles on it so it was needing a rebuild anyway. But if i were you i would do a rebuild if you don't want to go forged then that is ok because a stock set up is good for plenty of hp and mostly to build it back stock will not cost you very much. How bad is the head?

I would get a 6-bolt. If you don't trust yourself, it might not be the time to do a rebuild yourself, unless you have a lot of time on your hands... (which you said you don't) I would order a 6-bolt... It isn't that much work...:thumb:

I'm pretty sure there was no or almost no oil in the car at all. i will try to turn it just to make sure its locked up but i haven't done that yet. so i definitely want to get the 6-bolt but just wondering about the compression ratio. i looked at putting 2g pistons in a 6-bolt on vfaq but do you guys think its worth the trouble or should i just keep the 1g pistons. thanks for all the help.

If you can get some 2g pistons cheap and know of a machine shop that can mount them cheap then do it. But it can be expensive. It only cost me $50 to have them mounted. Ive heard of place's charging up to $150. The 1g pistons are lower in comp but that just means you can run more boost.

Its up to you on the rebuild. You have all the parts already and could have a shop do it most likely cheaper than if you bought a whole new engine.
