1G EGR blockoff plate

I'm getting ready to chase down idle surge which cropped up sometime while the car was parked in the garage for 4 years (it didn't have it when parked). I'm thinking it's some vacuum line deteriorated or got nibbled on or something like that.

But I'm going to follow Terry's Talon Troubleshooting guide and EGR blocking is one of the items. I figure I might as well just block it off for good since I'm taking it apart.

So I got a commercial block off plate from Level Zero Motorsports, and it came with the plate and also a fibrous gasket. My simple question is, which side of the plate does the supplied gasket go on? On the hot exhaust side, or on the other side?

The plate bolts to where the EGR unbolts from the intake. There are 2 holes in the intake under where the egr unbolts from. The plate will block both holes. The gasket will go on first and then the plate goes over the gasket. Make sure you scrape any of the old gasket off otherwise you could end up with a vacuum/boost leak or a small exhaust leak

The egr block off plate should look the one in this link. If it doesn't then you don't have the right one

That's the exact one I have ... and I think I understand now. I made a very poor assumption that gas was flowing from left to right or vice versa. Is it instead traveling in a U through the valve, that is in through one small hole and out the other?

Yeah that gasket goes on and then the plate to completely block the egr.

That is correct.

I made a block off plate from soda cans. Worked great so far

Good to get rid of the egr, but likely not ur vac leak culprit. If shes been sitting, the first place I would look for leaks are the injector seals at the head, and the throttle body seals.
