Although it's probably been asked before, I couldn't find it. I was wondering, when you block off the EGR valve, can you just unplug and pull off the EGR completely, and if so will the computer throw a CEL?

Any info is appreciated, sorry for the n00b-like question.

block of the intake
block off the head

yes you will get cels

if you unplug the solenoid
you will get a cel
if you leave the solenoid plugged you will still get an insufficient flow cel

I never threw a cel when I did mine on my 92'. I unbolted it and replaced it with a blockoff plate, then I plugged the vacume lines, pretty simple.

the trick is to take the battery out and let it sit for 30 mins then mod it then put the battery back...this deletes the maps.. tis true you must leave the sensor hooked up... all I did was put a cap over the intake manifold lead to the egr and then capped and ziptied the exhaust nub but left the sensor plugged in and it works fine...hasn't flagged yet and I've had it done like that for a long while (since july 05) my car is a 96 nt

I never threw a CEL. And I never had the cold-start up problems that I've heard complained about either. Just take all that emissions junk outta there. It's just a bunch of ugly mess anyway. Leave it for the tree-huggers. :thumb:

92 = OBD I
96 = OBD II
Thats why he threw a light.

He shouldn't have stated that it would throw CEL since the poster has an OBD I. As far as I know only the 1G California cars will throw a CEL when the EGR is tampered with. I did it to my Fed 90 and have had no troubles.

eye, gutted cats and removed egrs all around...could it depend on where and when the car was made?? ie. 95, 96-7, 98-9...aren't those the year gaps where wierd things happen???

96-99 cars will all react the same way because the federal government mandated the computer controls on all cars be very similar. These cars (OBDII) use not only circuit check function but also a "proper operation" or "suficient flow" check (called a Trip Monitor to us Techs). OBDI (89-94...note that 95 vehicles are OBDI/OBDII hybrid depending on peticular vehicle model). These OBDI vehicles capablities and circuit checks change greatly from year to year. Chrysler tended to be on the forefront of these and ahead of their time(which often got them into more trouble than they were worth). Most OBDI cars have a circuit check function only. This means that as long as the connector is hooked up or fooled it will not throw a light. You 2G guys are screwed until you stepup to DSMLink or another standalone.
