Hello I have a question, I recently did the vacuum delete on my 94 TSI. And i was going to be ordering a EGR blockoff plate, now my question is, Is there a plate that just screws into were the EGR valve went? I Dont want to get a plate that i have to put between the EGR and block, I just want a plate that will take the place of it and block everything off so i dont have to put the actual EGR valve over the plate. Does that make sense? Links/pics if possible thanks!

Ya, take a soda can, cut it where it's a sheet of aluminum and trace out the base of the EGR on that aluminum using a nail or "Sharpie" marker.

Then trim with a pair of scissors around the trace line and poke out the bolt holes smaller than the bolts themselves so this piece that you cut out will be held by the mounting bolts.

Then, just bolt the EGR back on and use golf tees to plug up the vacuum lines.

"Piece of Pie" ... oh, you might have to remove the battery to do this to get you some more room.

But, you can peek at this http://www.ukcar.com/features/tech/Engine/techno/exgr.htm link on should you remove it or not...

paying money on something you can make out of tin makes no sense, you can trace on a can, cut it out, and triple layer it and get the same thing as that 18 dollar block off plate for about 5 cents...cost of recycling....you chose

Oh I know what you mean by that. But He also said he didn't want to just bolt the EGR back on he wanted to completely remove it. That's the best looking block off I've seen to date. I was just thinking as i finished writing that, that I would much rather get some scrap aluminum from a guys shop I know and make my own.

I do this simply that our section of the state is thinking on doing some mandantory emissions testing and if it does, I unbolt the EGR, take my homemade blockoff out and put back in the EGR when the sniffing days do come around.

Might be a bit of work, but it will help me pass emissions tests.

I was buying stuff from STM anyway so I got their EGR block-off plate. highly recommend it.

i would have to agree with the soda can. its cheap clever and effective. but if you want to be for sure your egr is blocked off with no problems when you go to sleep every night order the plate.

I just installed the STM blockoff this weekend and it caused my car to idle surge. I thought it might be a flaw in the machine work, but theres not much to go wrong, its just a plate of aluminum. I used a new gasket and everything. So I put the egr back on and it idles fine now. Just thought Id throw that out there. anyone else have a problem with it?

I installed my blockoff plate a few days ago.

Got it on ebay for $5 SHIPPED.

You can use ANY blockoff plate without using the EGR valve itself. You just need to get some shorter bolts, and a couple lock washers for good measure.

I didn't experience any negative effects... no idle surge, vacuum at warm idle is about 19 in/Hg @ a very steady 800 rpm.

For what it's worth, I'd bet the soda can would burn through within a few months.

I have the same plate and it didn't cause my car to idle surge. my guess is you forgot about plugging a vacuum line somewhere.

the whole soda can block off plate for the egr mod, yeah dont do it..and shame on you for any of you guys in this thread who read VFAQ....VFAQ clearly states not to use a soda can cause like the one guy guessed, he was completely right..its effective for a few months but eventually burns through, then your back to square one.......

if your going to do the egr delete with the plate i recommend giving your TB a good complete cleaning, cause not only does the delete give your car cleaner and cooler air, it prevents any kind of nasty build up and you'll never have to clean the TB, look it up on VFAQ

I bought my EGR blockoff on ebay for 5 bucks shipped. Now I have DSMlink so I bought an ISC blockoff also.

Some NA motors came with a factory block off plate, try a trip to the wrecker to find one.

I'm glad that someone said it. I was reading though the whole thread and I was like why hasn't anyone mentioned the 1.8L DSMs?

The 1.8L 4G37 engine same from the factory with an EGR block off plate. A true block off plate that completely replaces the EGR valve. That is what I have on my car and I have had it on there for years.

What's the main benefit of doint this mod? I've been curious about it for a while. Thanks...

If you are eliminating your emissions system for any reason (to clean up the engine bay, or rather then fixing something, or just for fun) then you need to block off the EGR valve in addition to other unused vacuum ports.

Hope this helps!

Does Texas have emissions testing? And if so, do you put back on the EGR valve, or have you done some more serious mods to pass emissions?

Okey, if you don't want to do the soda can, could do a tin can ... LOL

Yes Texas has emissions testing but I have passed the tailpipe test for the past 4 years without any of the under hood emissions equipment. All I have is a Magnaflow hi-flow cat.

i wouldnt recommend using a soda can or tin can either, all of those things are very very thin aluminum...anyone who knows anything about aluminum is that when its really hot it will warp and since its the EGR, hot exhaust gases will eat right through it...so i suggest using REAL aluminum plates no more thicker than the flange on the egr valve and no thinner than 1/8 sheet metal..i took the EGR valve gasket and used that as a template on some 1/8th galvanized sheet metal and it worked perfectly....now my question is...when i did this mod it deleted the egr...the vacuum lines that when from the egr goes to the throttle body and to my thermostat housing...i eliminated those lines..it left me with 2 vacuum lines still on my throttle body...one of them is the P port in which is where my boost gauge is tapped into...what is the other vacuum line hooked too?? and what will happen if i disconnect it???

Are you saying that TIN cans are made of thin ALUMINUM?

This is the factory vacuum setup. Once you block off your ERG valve then the entire emissions vacuum setup is worthless so you might as well remove all of the vacuum lines running from the throttle body including the EGR valve, Thermal vacuum valve, purge control valve, charcoal canister, and evaporative emissions purge solenoid.

Anyways you can follow this diagram to see that two of the line on the throttle body go to the thermal vacuum valve on the thermostat and then over to the over to the EGR valve while the other two go to the purge control valve and then on to the charcoal canister and over to the evaporative emissions purge solenoid.

This is how to eliminate the emissions system. Cap off all the ports on the throttle body (you can use one for your boost gauge or you T into the Fuel pressure line). Block off your EGR and then you can remove pretty much everything else.

The only thing wrong with this diagram is that you should not T into the BOV line for your MBC. Use the nipple on the J-pipe/compressor housing instead.

You can also block off the thermal vacuum valve on the thermostat housing if you want to just to clean it up with a 3/8 pipe plug. As you can see in the picture I also blocked off the AC thermoswitch but that is a separate matter.

Hope this helps!
