Hey yall just got ahold of my first dsm and the guy who I got it from said it's gonna need a new ecm. I was trying to find out if I buy a new ecm from autozone that's been refurbished are they pretty just plug and play or do I need to get it programed? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

There isn't any special programming after the fact. Depending on if your car is a California or Federal version you're looking for

What's the difference between the federal and California version? And is the 9561 the federal and 9562 California or the other way around?

The programming for the more stringent California Emissions. MD159561 is the Federal version. The programming is part of the ECU's microprocesor when it's manufactured in these computers so you need the correct version. The Federal version should work in both versions of the car but the California version is likely to throw a fault code in a Federal car.

It also may be cheaper/better to have your ECU repaired than to buy one from an autoparts store. Pull yours and see which number it is. You can take the cover off being careful to not strip the screws and post pictures so we can see how bad the capacitor corrosion is.

Here's an example of a MD159561 where the capacitors had leaked all the way to the edge connector.
