Hello everyone, I am new to the site. I just picked up two cars, one is a 91 Eclipse GS and the other is a 92 Eclipse GS. Both cars are badged to have the 2.0L DOHC engine. The 91 came with no motor and transmission while the 92 came with the 2.0L DOHC motor and transmission. I bought these cars to make one good car for my son to start out driving with, and the plan is to take the motor and transmission out of the 92 and put it in the 91 since it is in much better condition than the 92. My biggest question is will I need to swap the engine wiring harness from the 92 to the 91 or will I be able to use the original harness that's still in the 91?

Welcome to the site! It is good that you verified they both were badged to have the 2.0L engine. That’s most of the work. The other question is whether they were badged for the same style of transmission, auto or manual, or not?

In case both are manual, it is a direct mechanical swap - no harness changes necessary. If both are auto, you might need to look at some of the connectors for the transmission. If one is manual and one is auto, you’ll want to use the harness that matches what equipment you are putting into the ‘91.

Thank you! And both cars are manual transmission. Sweet! Thanks 19Eclipse90! Having that answer really cut out a lot of extra work. Also, will the ECM that goes with the motor from the 92 work with the 91 harness?

No problem. Yes, the ‘92 ECU will work with a ‘91 harness.

The only other question for the ECU is in regards to emissions: Cali or Federal spec. Having one versus the other won’t keep the engine from operating but may throw a check engine light or lightly hinder performance if it doesn’t have the supporting equipment on the engine. Best practice would be keeping the ECU with the engine you’re using.
