Well it's time for a clutch now something more meetier than the stock one. For a while i have alwys used a stock clutch. Well after my front mount and tranny install i went back to the track and was amazed the power the front mount made me and that it was just too much for stock clutches anymore.. I launched at 5250 and the clutched slipped all the way through 3rd and i ran a 13.50. So i'm thinking i should be running 13.10s and ###### making like 270 to the wheels. Crazy thing is when i get on my car from a 1st ger roll it never slips.. Only after i launch. But that sounds right like the clutch is heating up and getting soft and then slipping. But anyways i want a nice heavy duty clutch with still a decently soft peddle and i heard that they are pretty nice. I used one in my turbo civic and it held fine. Just wanted to know how they run in these cars. Let me know guys. Thanks!

Why in the world are you launching at 5250 RPMs?

Anyways...
I have an XTD Stage 4 and love it. After breaking an ACT (2900 I think by the ridiculously heavy pedal) that my car had when I bought it, I put in a Fidanza 4.3. The springs all broke within probably 1000-2000 miles with only a few launches on it. I put in the XTD in the summer, and it's been great. Not much chatter, no slipping, no smelling even with about 15 launches in a row at the local 1/8 mile drag strip. Don't get the sprung disc, sprung discs are just a weak link in the drivetrain.

I also put one in the last 2G I fixed up and sold; on that one I used the crappy throwout bearing that came with the kit and it was really noisy. GET AN OEM THROWOUT BEARING and give the one from the kit to someone you hate!

I would highly recommend the XTD Stage 4 to anyone up to the level I'm at and probably a little higher.

The eBay XTD Clutch and flywheel were pretty good for the first 2k miles but I could never launch the car with it in, it would just sit in place and slip. From a roll it grabbed awesome. Back then I was running 22psi on a 14b, IMO the act2600 is well worth the money, I can slip it all day long on 24psi on an evo 3 16g and it takes the abuse!

Which one did you have??? Jrohner is putting down 459lb of torque OMG and you just read what he had to say about it.

Sorry, I had the stage 3 (sprung 6-puck), not the stage 4. Definitely not enough clamp load for the clutch to work properly. The disc itself didn't wear down that much, it just gouged out the flywheel and pressure plate until they were out of spec.

Even when I had my boost set down to 15psi on the 14b I could not get a launch out of the car, but from any mph roll it would grab fine.

Do you think the stage 4 is going over board? I'm only throwing to the crank probably like 320. By nextt year i should be fully built throwing probbly like 500 or so. And what do you mean why launch at 5250? Any lower all i do is bog.. What do you launch at?

All the more reason to get it now. Do you really want to buy a clutch now, just to buy another and have to replace it?

Personally I loved my Exedy stage 1 clutch kit (2100lbs). Held up just fine to around 350whp and never really slipped on me and I put over 35000 miles of abuse on it. If my goals weren't for much higher I'd throw another one of those in my car in a heart beat!

I'm going with that clutch next year, I hope I get the same results.

That's what I have. Nice pedal pressure, not crazy hard on the leg but not too soft either. Hasn't slipped yet with about 6k on it and quite a few back to back launches when I was practicing on a few different occasions in empty parking lots.

Although something in my trans is broken now, loud screeching sound when the car's on and it won't go into gear. I figure it's probably the tob but I won't know for sure until I pull it next month (or maybe the month after that, or after that ect ect....) , I wouldn't be surprised though if it's due to poor installation (didn't shim pivot ball, didn't check adjustment very well) or poor driving as I tried to teach a friend how to drive stick in it.

My question is why not just go with an ACT or Exedy? Even SBR or Centerforce? Why Ebay? If people are grenading parts and sitting in place slipping...why take the chance? Do it right the first time :thumb:

No one has had anything bad to say about the stage 4, and it's crazy cheap compared to what I got. Oh hindsight..... :coy:

Because in my galant, the xtd stage 4 held better and lasted longer than the spec, and act it replaced. This is on a large turbo, with full supporting mods.

No doubt. I seen an add with a flywheel included for like 329 I think? As for the screeching sound if it goes away when you push the pedal in it may very well be the TOB. I can't wait to get it, and put it in to feel the difference. This OEM exedy doesn't slip at all unless it gets hot then you can smell it.

One more thing, shim the pivot ball for the fork?

ALso the stage one exedy has 1950 lb. not 2100.

We have XTD stage 3 in the FWD car and I can tell you the extra $ for the unsprung stage 4 is worth it. That clutch will hold at well over 600 hp. the stage 3 isn't bad but its nowhere near as good as an unsprung.

Ditto, I'm putting in my xtd unsprung stage 4 on Monday along with my new motor and I am going to try the tob it came with

That is my main concern, although it is tempting as I haven't seen any complaints on the stage 4. I'm doing a 5 speed swap in the months to come and I still am not sure what clutch I'm going with. What do you guys think? Around stock FWD power, but my goal is in the 300-400 range in the future.

So no ACT?

Right now I'm looking at either the ebay stage 4

Or an unsprung ebay XTD stage 4

Or the Exedy stage 1

Which out of the ebay clutches would you recommend? I will be DD'ing it.

I'm a drivetrain noob so all the help I can get is appreciated.

Interesting...I'm thinking next time I burn out a clutch I'll try out the stage 4 XTD...seems like lots of people have had good results.
