ebay not so knock off?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Appears to be similar to what I threw on the hubby's GST. He's over 1000 miles on it with no issues as of yet. Ebay's like gambling... every once in awhile, you get lucky. In the end, it's ultimately up to you. Do you want to spend that $300 on a gamble? Or spend about $600 on a 'real' one from a vendor on here?

The whole this is, it's cheaper for a reason. Why is a true MHI 16g $600 while the ebay version is $230 (NEW). Cheaper materials, less R&D, cheaper labor rates for workers. Sometimes you get lucky that the things are somewhat balanced and the clearances are ok. Other times they'll throw themselves apart in a weeks time of use. Also, those 16g turbos seems to use both Garret and MHI internals so you would need 2 kits to put one together for a rebuild.

It's a gamble and piece of mind is better than a potentailly blown motor and the cost of buying multiples for cheap starts adding up to the price of a genuine unit.

if i were you i would talk to forced performance and see what they can do for you . they often run 499 shipped special on the evo 3 turbos.maybe they can work out payments with you or something

Get the real thing, and do it right THE FIRST TIME. You're not saving youself any money. If anything you're losing money in the long term. Like said above, it may work great, but if it doesn't, it could send shrapnel through your engine. Or at the very least/best case senario , it will need to be rebuilt, in which you'll still be in the hole.

I understand bargin buying... I really do, but I don't understand peoples blind willingness to risk potentially thousands of dollars in damage, just to save what? $150 bucks?

I have bought a few eBay turbos, and thell all made it 2000miles, ome literally split in half a mile down the road, the others were impossible to regulate boost, I would not spend the money on eBay, u get what u pay for, a dsm can not handel bs, let's be serious how the car will respond to a china junk! If u want pm me I'll send u a t25, that's in perfect cintidion for 150 plus ship, it will bolt right up and go

or this one.. i dont have alot of money right now and need my car to run..:(

If you need your car to run and don't have alot of money, I'd just go with a good used 14b... Why get a 16g? If you can't afford the real thing, than that must mean you can't afford the supporting mods either, and that'll end up costing you much more in the long run, which just worsen the money problem, no?

And yeah, your thread title kinda confuses me...

how about searching the classified ads, or part out ads for turbos. such as the evo3 16g. :sneaky: you never know what you will come across

I put one up for $250 shipped with no turbine housing or wastegate, I swear it didn't last 5 minutes.

I just dnt have money for a 400+ used16g. Im just stuck between a rock and a hard place ya know.

I'd just go with a good used 14b

I'd say go his route then. 14b turbo is cheap to buy, last close to forever if well taken care of, will get you some good power and quick spool and should fit your budget if you can buy a ebay price turbo.

We can't give you an opinion on that turbo. Because no one runs it yet from that vendor. I can tell you that I've run an indentical looking turbo to that one, and it blew to hell. I don't understand why you have asked us what we think. No one knows because the companies and parts that are copies of the real deal swap so many times.

Like stated before there both "fake turbo's"..

I actually am running one of these right now..I don't know If it's from the same vendor..I got mine off a parts car I bought 2 years ago..

And two years later It hasn't blow up yet..I say yet cause I'm just waiting for it to blow..Now I also have less than 1000 miles on it..The only thing that has went wrong with the turbo is one of the compressor wheel blades did break..But as of the last time I checked, no shaft play..

So in conclusion..Like stated before also..I would pick up a 14b untill you can afford the real thing..

It's always a gamble, look at how many threads are on this site and that should give you a clue. Sometimes you get a good one, often times they don't last. I would rather spend $300 dollars on a rebuilt MHI turbo(I did) than $300 on a turbo that may grenade sooner than later. PM jusmx141,a reputable rebuilder who I and I'm sure many other have bought turbos from.

If need be do it but it proably won't last.. My evo 316g off ebay lasted for about 3000 miles at 15psi while wearing in my motor.. It was ok cause i bought a used big 16g for 150 and ive been pushing 22psi for sometime now LOL.. And the turbo is still just as tight as the day i bought it.. Go real if you can if not ebay's will do the trick.. Just be sure to prime it some say it doesn't do anything but i do it just incase.

But that's the thing. He doesn't NEED to.

I just dnt have money for a 400+ used16g. Im just stuck between a rock and a hard place ya know.

No you arn't. What is your goal? There's a large chance that if you get a fake 16g it will blow up pushing it to the level of performance that would merrit buying a 16g over buying a 14b. If you just want to buy it and push it to stock 14b levels of performance just to say you have a 16g, then by all means you're choice is yours to make. But you can also etch the 16g model number in your stock 14b since you'll not be advancing the setup to a level to merrit a 16g :p

If you're willing to check the oil pressure (it seams the fake 16g turbos have different oil requirements than real ones), and are willing to have it pulled apart and balanced (they seam to be grossly out of balance) then you should have something that might be as reliable. But then you've spent about as much or more than that $400+ you're afraid of.

yeah sorry about the profile, this is my brothers im on here for him he's not the techy one. i just bought a 94 tsi talon and it has a t25 on it for some reason... i know they dont come with them but it has one. someone before me must have swapped it. i guess if i can get a good 14b for cheap(ish) i will because as of now i dont have fuel mods.. who sells good rebuilt turbos on here thats trustable...? and/or who has a 14b for sale used in good condition.

Pm'ed jusmx141 awaiting reply. Il probly just get a rebuilt 14b till I can afford a evo3
