The first is a local guy who just started making chips from the information that's available on the web. He doesn't write his own code (If you don't write your own code your limited to the basic examples of features that have been shared) and is just the latest in a string of quick buck chip venders.

The second is a chip from a company that was bootlegging TMO chips.

I wouldn't buy either.

It's quite easy to do the 2-step yourself if you have a chip burner; they are only 80 bucks and the chips are only like 4 bucks a piece. You can then custom tune your car, if you get a tune from someone it will need fine tuning anyways to be anywhere near optimal and an afc costs more than a chip burner and is not as easy to use or install.

Has anyone ever tried either one? Do you have to have an Eprom ECU to use a chip from DSMchips?

You must have a socketed eprom ECU and then you can use the dsmchips in it ...great people to deal with ...just tell jeff what your setup is and he'll burn a chip for a very good price.:thumb::talon:

holy crap, you can get 20 chips and a chip burner for the price they want for those things!

First Generation DSM EPROM Editing

Just gotta learn a little bit of hex, it's really easy once you get the hang of it. There is also tunerpro and an ostrich so you can edit on the fly.

Using the link you just posted, you really don't have to know programming or anything.

If you just want to tune (injectors, afr, timing), you can just use tunerpro and never touch a hex editor.

Theres a lot of us that do our own ecu editing. All the info is in the dsmecu yahoo forums and the above link is a good starter. If you were to buy a chip, I would recommend DSMchips, Jeff is well recommended and has done who even knows how many. The hex editing isnt that hard to learn and all the info is out there. Tunerpro is real user friendly. When you get familiar you can look into DSmap as well as an option

Chip burning or emulating sure beats having to get an afc just to fine tune with. It's cheaper, far superior, and actually easier to tune with tunerpro than an afc. I had an safc2 for a while on my 2g, and although it worked pretty decent, it's still just more of a workaround than a real tuning solution.

I would recommend someone starting out tuning just run the airflow sensor to start with and get some tuning experience before doing anything too radical. It's easier to learn by starting small and working your way up to more complicated things.

I am thinking about putting a 1g ecu in my car and running dsmap, but my 2g starts so awesome even when it's cold outside (even 0 or below). I'd really hate to mess that up, since I hear a lot of people don't have as good of luck on E85 in the cold.

I have gotten two burned chips from a friend and they have worked perfectly. I love that i do not need to hook up a wire for the stutter box or antilag, twothings i have not seen anywhere else. Anyone who says he does not write his own code is just trying to keep the market to all to them self.

you can write basic stutterbox and antilag without hooking up a wire. Its the NLTS and multi rpm stutterbox that need the wire. You can use the speed sensor for check for stutterbox and antilag.

On my chips i am able to select the different stutter box RPMs with no clutch switch wire. The NTLS needs one to work but i do not even use it my FWD. I would just burn the tires thru every gear.

But nlts, you def need a wire. Im auto, so i dont use the stutterbox. When i had a 5spd, i didnt write my own eprom,i just bought dsm chip and now that i remember i had selectable stutterbox without a wire hooked up, youre right. But the fact is that there are a great number of us who can write the chip for someone effectively. This person chooses to make a business out of it. For the DSM community, jeff(from dsmchips) is well respected, stands by his work, can custom do anything, and charges $20 for a reflash later on when you make changes. Not to say that this Precision chip is any less effective but its most likely derived from the info in the Yahoo forums which we all have access to(thats how i learned and continue to learn). Jeff,Steve, and some others are the brains which has made all of these ecu changes available to us. Just as well, Steve is the only one that will ever get their hands on my computer for any kind of board work(ive had great success a few times now, and he can obviously create an eprom chip as good as anybody)

I didnt know what a "hex code" even was before i started reading the yahoo ecu forums. It took me a bit but i began to learn and practice and am able to save myself from many reflashes when im tuning and implement some cool stuff as well. It was so worth it imho. But im a perfect example of someone who uses the info shared in the yahoo forums but couldnt really write my own stuff which i wont need to because pretty much everything is out there, at least what ive needed.

Reopening this topic for personal learning reasons... I have a Socketed EPROM ECU. I did the socket service myself on all my eproms just to do since I have a nice solder station. But I was going to end up going DSMAP on my car but right now I just can't afford it. I'm slowly trying to stop spending cash on other things and just get on with it. But I'm honestly interested in looking into burning my own chips. And I would like to know where to start.. A burner, a program, chips... If its cheaper than running the Ostrich.

Oh I want it, trust me. I almost had one for 140 bucks but I didn't have the cash, so I was relying on selling parts haha. But nobody came through so I lost out. I have everything else, just need the ostrich.

Anyone know of a good USB Chip Burner that works for our chips? And where I can get a good software and chips. Pref a program that doesn't require hex.

My computer doesn't have a serial port like that, hell my computer doesn't have a regular DB9 Serial port. I'm all USB for Datalogging.

Bump because I want to know the same exact thing. Turns out I have an ECU that can accept a socket - which I can do myself. From the post above yours, isn't that a chip burner?

A chip burner or emulator won't do you any good either if your ECU has no EPROM chip. Both of those devices are for EPROM-type ECU's.

Could you tell me what ship I should buy to do this? Also what brand is a good one to go with? I have a few programs to try and burn a chip in a used euc.?
