DSMLINK or something else?

Okay so i have a 95 tsi with eprom 16g, 2.5 buscher turbo back,afc, 1g bov modded and filter mod. What i am trying to figure out is should i get dsmlink or go another route. I am pretty good with computers and pick up things quickly so i can read and teach myself but i am 2.5 hours away from the nearest dyno. So im stuck.

It works in a 2g. I don't think anyone has tried to retrofit it into a 1g yet.

What if i want 400hp, but its only going to be my DD. Do i still need a Dsmlink? Or will a chip do since i wont need any race tuning done.
