I personally am looking to do some weight reduction while retaining the quiet/smooth ride, and still having a spare so I can go on the highway without getting flatbedded home.

heres some of my ideas, just normal of course.

CF hood
Ditch all of my stereo and just get upgraded 6x9, 5.25, and 3.5's hooked to the factory amp/deck.
CF Hatch<<<Anyone make one for us?
CF Spoiler<<Anyone make it?
Dimple Drilled/Slotted Rotors

What else is there? I dont wanna tear out all the sound deadening or the spare tire.

yea but if you want the best possible performance then you gotta do what you gotta do even if it makes you ride look like shit on the inside

i understand.. but 2 pounds is 2 pounds... thats 1day of no eating... or 1octane higher gas...it doesnt seem like it really affects the car that much...if you wanted to lose alot of weight, you would take off the fenders, bumpers, and sideskirts..hell even the hood. but whenever i see fully gutted cars.. they always seem to keep that 100-200 pounds on the car just because of how it looks anyway..

and on another note..look at john shepherds 1g, its got full interior and its runnin mid 8's

Ripping up the carpet to remove the sound deadening material will save you atleast 17 pounds or so(not including the carpet), and the 2 pound carpet can be redone.
It all adds up in the end though, and shep. did other things to lighten his car.

alright, then remove your fenders bumpers hood and any other metal that has nothing to do with the structural integrity of your car :p
hey...at least you will have better heat dissipation ;)

Removing your carpet for weight reduction is ridicilous, its almost as bad as the person that wanted to remove the heat insulation under the hood.

I think the best things to gut the car would be to remove the rear seats, rear windshield wiper components, get rid of jack and spare, wood piece in the back that makes the floor in the hatch (at least on 2g), and of course A/C Components.

Other than the previous forementioned items, I think it is pointless to remove anything else.

heres a list of some weight reduction things you can do:
1.remove rear seats
2.remove interior panels
3.remove spare tire
4.replace rear and side windows with light weight polycarbonate
5.replace front seats with light weight racing seats
6.replace doors and trunk lid with light weight materials
7.cut and foam fill excess frame and interior componets
8. remove any thing you dont think is important (rear window wiper componets, a/c)
hope that helps

excellent example of what an excellent power to weight ratio can do for you. They also ripped up the carpet to remove the sound deadening material, along with a lot of other stuff too.But thats strictly just a dragster now, but again the carpet can be redone once your finished stripping away uneeded pounds.

Here is some fluid numbers for you.

1 Gallon:
gas 6.2lbs
water 7lbs
oil 8.4lbs

1quart:
gas 1.55lbs
water 1.75lbs
oil 2.10lbs

13.2 gallons of gas= 81.84lbs <---- I know we hold about that much gas.

The July issue of Import Tuner shows a breakdown of a 2003-2004 Civic Si. They removed 19lbs of sound deadening. They took it in 3 stages from mild to crazy.

Stock battery 28lbs --->8lbs for a lightweight battery. That flimsy piece of cardboard over your sparetire weighs about 4lbs.

There is more, I just can't type it all. Remember this is for a Civic. But most things weigh about the same in other vehicles. Such as batteries and fuel.

wow, all under 4k$ ...except if they crash, theyre dead. the seatbelt is installed incorrectly, you should use a harness bar or else if you crash, your spine will be compressed and youll be left dead. not a good idea!

thanks a lot midnight. and by the way people, taking out the carpets and other ''ludicrous items'' makes huge deal. My BMW initially weighed 3200 lbs. it now weighs just under 2800 (and i've still maintained 50/50 weighting.) a lot of that came from seats, AC, spare tire, but a great majority came from the stupid stuff. my rear seats weight 35 lbs total in the DSM (thanks to info posted by you guys :) and from that same info, all my sound deadening weighs 35 and carpets and rugs combined weigh just over 15 lbs. so that ''stupid stuff' weighs 50 lbs man. it all adds up. on the BMW, it was like adding 50 horsepower, and the handling gains were amazing. from what those of you with numbers have posted, i should be able to shave off over 300 lbs on the DSM, and i'll be carefully measuring the gains it yields in performance :) thanks a lot guys. and if you know anything about moving the engine or tranny, or anything backwards to evenly distribute weight, let me know! thanks a lot!

Let us know your end results and how you feel the car changed performance wise, goodluck with it :thumb:

300lbs is a lot, should be an easy 20 or so extra horses.

1G OEM Seats Rear Seats (upper and lower, leather) 40lbs

ok i have a 1g, and my rear leather weigh nothing close to 40 pounds, no way in hell, its all foam.

They might be talking about everything. From the actual foam to the bracketing used to hold it all down. Also might aswell take out the seatbelts and brackets for those aswell.

umm..i was just reading through the thread, and i noticed on several occasions you guys reffered to weight reductions adding horsepower. This is not true. Cutting weight will better the overall power/weight ratio, not add horsepower. I know a lot of u guys know this already, i was just pointing it out for the ppl who didnt.

I think I am gonna go take out my backseats now...hey its a better excuse not to have to give people rides along w/ being lighter

"With calculations complete, final numbers show a horsepower of to weight ratio of 18.18. For every 18.18 lb removed, the car will gain approximately one horsepower."
Thats for a Honda Civic Si though
-Import Tuner

Less strain on the engine = more power

Look at it from the side of a streetbike racing a 93hp civic. Power to weight is "LIKE" adding horsepower.

200lb bike with 93hp vs. a 2300lb car with 93hp

You figure the winner.

Thats it. Nice issue. I wish they would get a shop like Buschur or Prostreets to do this with a 2G car and a 1G.

No, you can NOT gain true horsepower through weight reductions. the only power you get from weight reductions are the ones in the rotating mass of the motor itself. If you can show me a dyno chart where someone truly benifited from weight reduction, show me please, b/c i dont think it exists.

Weight reductions change the power to weight ratio, making it less weight for the same amount of power to push, thats why you get faster.

You are ready to much into it.

It is saying that the power to weight ratio comes to about 18.18.

So for every loss of 18.18lbs it will "FEEL" like you gained 1hp.

See my sportbike example above. Shedding pounds will inturn make you faster.

has anyone delt with polk ??? his shop isnt far from here and i was thinking about getting him to work on my car
but i was gonna check here firstt

Yes, he built my motor, head, and sheet metal intake. He is a great guy to work with. Really knows his stuff. I would recomend him for any DSM needs.

Other than the obvious, the only radical thing that I've seen is a 2G with the radiator where the back seat used to be.

But, seriously, are you ever going to happy in a DSM after racing a BMW? I really doubt it. They are not in same time zone.
