2G Door Handles Help! [Merged 11-7] broke broken eBay replacement repair handle outside

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Pick one up off ebay, have it painted, and install it yourself. Thats what I did except I was lucky enough to find 2 on ebay that were already white like my talon which was an improvement since I had black handles anyway. That is probably the cheapest way to do it.

It is a pain in the ass to put a door handle on a 2g though. It's a straight forward install but spaces are really tight inside the door so good luck reattaching the linkage. That was the part that I got stuck on for a while.

Just curious, what color is your eclipse? If it's white, PM me.

yep. anybody had this happen before? i did a search and nothing came up about 1gs. anybody got a clue on how easy/hard it will be to fix?
drivers side, part towards the front of the car. i'm thinking junkyard, but i have no clue about the locks, or if the handle itself can be swapped out. any help would be great.

My driverside handle was broken on my 90 when I bought it. It's a PITA to get it out and swap in the new one. From what I can remember it was just one 10mm bolt but the clips rods were kinda tough to get loose. The lock pops out after you remove a clip. The rod for the handle is hard to reach but once it's off the handle just comes right out. I got my handle from ebay but any junkyard will have what you need.

My passenger side handle was broke when I bought my car, my dad used jb weld on it, and even though that sounds rediculously ghetto, it worked really well. You can't even tell and it's held up for about 9 months now. As far as the actual locking mechanisms in the door, all I remember is that it was a huge pain, I would definitely have a manual with you if you're gonna try to attempt it. I might just suggest getting a new handle at a junkyard or something if you can find it. Good luck.

You have to take off the door covering on the inside, peel back the clear plastic, then have fun trying to get your arm to reach the hardware. Be careful not to drop tools or bolts in the door as they are then considered gone and also be wary of your window, it is better to put it up when doing this. I found that the best tool is a 10mm wratcheting wrench. Be careful to not break the plastic clip that holds the rod onto the handle itself. Good look, and try to no get too angry when doing this, ### it sucks!

thanks for the tips. definitely got the manual, but i think i might try the jb weld first. sounds easy enough.
did he do any prep on it? how much did he apply?

By going with the JB weld you do not have to deal with getting a door handle out of DSM twice. I think they had small handed people working at that plant in Illinois when these were built, it amazes me the tight places that misc. bolts are placed.

We actually pulled the handle from the car first. Like I said before, it was a project my dad and I were working on and he did most of the work on the handle. I really don't believed he did much prep work with it really, just made sure it was decently clean, applied the jbw where it was needed and he got it really good but he also made sure that it didn't run or look messy. You also must make sure that you let it dry for a good amount of time. You really can't even see or tell that anything was done to it now. I really wish that I could be more descriptive but it was done such a long time ago, I was just glad to have it over with.

They imported small children, that had their hands bound since birth to slow the growing of their hands, from the island of Madagascar, but it wasn't slavery, they received good pay and an excellent dental plan.

It has 2 6mm bolts (10mm head) holding it in place. Mine was broken on my car when I first got it, so I had to open the door crawling in the passenger side.
Agreed it is a PITA, but taking it out is a hell of a lot easier to do than put it back in.
As stated once you get it out you will need to remove the clip for the lock and remove it and put it in your new handle.
The hard part about getting it out and putting it back in is the rod you have to fit into the plastic fittings, one for the door lock and one for the handle. To get them out, you'll need to try to unhook the plastic catch from itself for each and then it is simple to just push the rod back out with a flat head screwdriver pushing it outwards from the inside of the door.
The plastic fittings can also be undone from inside the door. Once these are free you need to maneuver the handle out of it's place. Replace the locking mechanism in your new unit and put it back in.
Once back in place, you can try to get your hands inside the door to pull the rods back into the plastic fittings but that often gets frustrating when it doesn't work. What you can do is hold the handle out away from the door as far as possible without removing it. While doing this, use a flat head screwdriver to maneuver the rods into the fittings, then push them into place with the screwdriver. Lock back your plastic pieces, bolt the handle in place, and make sure it works.
I got mine from a junkyard, and like I said taking it out is a hell of a lot easier than putting it in so don't worry about having to take it off twice.
Post up if you have questions on that.

SO funny!

i bought a car that has a broken door handle on the pass side. i looked at the 2g guide to fix it but that didnt really solve my problem. i got the dorr handle off and the new one in by just looking at it and figuring it out, but when i get it back together i attach the little platic clip and it doesnt hold the bar tight enough to actually open the door, it just slides down it accomplishing nothing. i tried it many different ways and couldnt figure any way out to even rig it to work. if anyone has a trick or tip or had the same problem and figured it out let me know please, my girlfriend will kill me if she cant open her door by herself soon.
thanks
Jeremy

If I understand you, the plastic clip on the handle is not holding the rod inplace. if this is what is happening, take door handle back out { I know....sorry}, take your handle to a local body shop supply store and buy a new clip. or your local body shop should help you out.

before you go off doing that what happens alot with these cars is that the linkage gets bent when the door handle was first ripped off. You can tweek the linkage it back into place by hand, check it out.

My problem is that my door will not open from the outside door handle. But it will open from the inside door handle. This problem was started by having to pull up on the outside door handle farther and farther up as time went by. It took about a month before it did not work anymore. Everytime the door was opened during this month period i would have to pull up harder and harder on the door handle to get the door to open? Has anyone had this problem before? Or tell me what is broke or worn out?

Right after I bought my Talon, I had the same problem, so I took the door apart and was able to lubricate it with some wd-40 and it's worked for a year now.

I belive something broke. Check out the DIY tech forums, they have instructions on how to fix it. If not, check ebay and search for Eclipse/Talon door handles. Even the Sebring and Chrysler door handles work too. They should be brand new, and sell for 30 bucks a pair, painted black or whatever color you choose. I had that same problem when I first got my Talon, so I just replaced them, brand new, no problems yet... hope this helps, and points do too....

i know its something in the door that has worn out. Iv tooking the door panel off and tried to find out what had broke, but i had no luck.

check the little rods that run from the handle to the latch, sometimes they get a little bend in them, and as you keep opening the door it will bend a little more and more. sometimes you can just sraighten it out otherwise head to the junkyard
