I just installed a different head after my timing belt went. Everything is back together and the break-in period is over. Last night i revved past 5,000 rpm. for the first time and noticed it was struggling, I let off at 5,500. Then a riced-out Honda cruised by so i stepped on it, went to about 6,000 rpm's, now theres a huge cloud of smoke behind my car. I opened the hood to notice my dipstick shot up, and oil sprayed all over the underneath of my hood, then dripped all over the motor and exhaust. What could be the problem? I already replaced the PCV valve and does the same thing???

Pinch the tube but just enough to hold it tight, too much will result in what the prevous poster has stated. Do this at your own risk though. Two weeks ago my oil catch can which both the pcv and breather vents to froze, caused excessive crank case pressure which blew my turbo seal, I wish my dipstick would have poped then.

Criminy, don't wind it that tight. Your cams, oil pump and balance shafts are turning 16,000 rpm. That's too much.

And yes, blow-by is what's popping out the dipstick. High rpms on an old motor will make it worse.

the balance shafts and oil pump are spinning faster than the crank, but them cams better be only spinning at half crank speed on this here 4 cycle engine. ;)

for some reason, the dipstick for the oil keeps popping out...i would put it back in, then after a mile of driving, it pops back out a little. a mechanic had told me that possibly the air from the turbo is some how getting in there (btw, my turbo isnt working properly if that has anything to do with it) . any thoughts?

LOL go smack your mechanic...It's from excessive blow by from your worn out piston rings. Theres a few threads on here on ways to fix it.

I've seen more cases of bad PCV valves pressurizing the crankcase and blowing the dipstick out than from worn out rings. Considering how difficult it is to find PCV valves that actually seal under boost that's not suprising.

A stock PCV only vents crankcase gasses when Manifold Pressure < Crankcase Pressure.
So under boost/high RPMs nothing is getting out of the PCV (the VC breather yes).

All the more reason to run a straight fitting in place of the PCV and route to a catch can so that pressure is constantly released so does not build up :thumb:

This is how they are intended to work. The vast majority of applications for the PVC valve used in DSM's are NA engines and don't see many cases where Manifold Pressure > Crankcase Pressure. There normally required to just close the PVC valve at WOT when the manifold is at ATM.

I've tested a lot of PCV valves, every autoparts store valve I've tested wouldn't seal against boost pressure. The ones I used to get from the dealer would until they stopped selling turbo cars and then they started being hit or miss. I have to check to see what the EVO VIII uses and if they fit start using them since I put my last good one in somebody elses car this week end when we were pressure testing his intake.

Can just be a worn dipstick too. The rubber drys out and wears out as time goes on. I had the same problem, and I replaced the dipstick and have never had the problem again.

I had the same problem with my dipstick...I didn't think it was my rings because my engine was replaced with a low mileage one (receipt). I went down to the dealers and bought myself a brand new oem mitsu pcv and dipstick. Has never popped out again, even when running really high rpms.

Mine does the same thing, when I boost blasted thing pops out and spews oil everywhere.
I think its just the dipstick.

just like some one else said this happend to me I went and got a new pcv/dipstick and it never happened again! Mine was just like you said I would drive it like 3-5 miles it would pop up over and over again. Just do these two things they are easy and cheap and will prolly solve the problem :thumb:

thanks for the reply guys, i have one more question tho. the oil seems to burn kinda quick too, whats causing that?

Ok so I was running the Road Race Engineering Catch can, exactally like they show on there page. One line to the PCV valve, the other to the breather. Drove the car last night, hit boost than got a strange smell, thought it was clutch or something. Pull into my parking spot at home, oil everywhere under the hood.... Just got done reading about people's dipsticks popping out yesterday too, so I checked that first. Sure enough.... popped out a inch or so. So I stuck it back in and cleaned everything off last night.

Than this morning, I took out the PCV valve, and replaced it with one I hollowed out the other day.... stuck it back in and now no flying dipsticks ROFL

But the crazy thing, other than me still trying to work out a little fuel cut in 3rd gear, is the car actually seems to run a bit better. Like no more or very very little lifter tick... atleast way less than before. Car seems just as fast or not faster than before.... WTF..... I did a compression test 152's across the board. Not too bad for a 91 TSI with 122k on it.... so what happened... Should I be ok now, no smoke from the tail pipe, no smoking under the hood.... everything runs great!

Give me your imput guys... please.

Drove the car to work today and back... still running strong.... going to take it on a 80 mile trip tonight... hopefully everything is fine.

So that now, any time you run boost, you're pumping up your crankcase pressure?

Yeh, that's a funny one, alright.

He said he's running a catch can, so how is he pressurizing his crankcase anymore than it already would've been from the blowby. If the hose was still attached to the intake manifold and his hollow PCV valve then what you said would make sense. If I'm wrong please enlighten me to your way of thinking.

Hey, I'm having the same problem too. My Dipstick popped out today and this was the first time that it happened. I this normal?

My fault, read too fast.

It's blowby and a worn dipstick doing the magic.

It happens if your PCV valve is clogged. Replace your PCV valve or get a catch can.

What kind of input are you looking for? You're suppose to hollow out the pcv or replace it with an 1/8" npt straight fitting which you have done, are you still having problems ?

How are your pcv and breather routed?

I just replaced my PCV valve today with an OEM one...was running a Fram one. I replaced it because I didn't know why all of a sudden my dipstick started popping out after having it for more than two years. It only did it sometimes, I can push it a couple times in one sitting and it won't pop out. Boost once on the way to work and it decides to come out, so it was sort of random.

After putting the OEM one in, I took it out for a drive and it was consistent with the power. I did notice when the dipstick did pop out, it pulled better right before it happened. If I went WOT a couple of times and it felt sluggish, I noticed it didn't pop out. So possibly there is some kind of correlation there.
