420A Died when in neutral?

My car died when I was coasting in neutral (manual trans) then almost died again after I turned it back on to park it but I saved it by stepping on the gas, why did it do that?

idle dropped too low, could possibly be a tuneup, seems like that always helped with this sort of problrm for me
