I have searched threads and i still cant find the answer to my specific question. I have a 90 gst stock basic bolt ons and a 90 tsi with a big 16g front mont and intercooker piping. I recently baught a sierial port data logging cable from ebay for $30. I tried to use the free logging softwear they said to use but cant get it to work on my computer for some reason. (Tunerstein Datalogging software ) I was wondering if there are any other free datalogging softwear for a laptop that might be easier to instal. Or a cheap softwear alternitive. Thanks for you time. Yeah, I've had problems with Tunerstein as well. I would suggest trying OBDgauge and see if that works for you.

I never got Tunerstein to work either, OBD gauge is good but since he's a 1g I'm willing to bet he'll want to try and log knock, which OBD gauge cant do.

IMO, the *BEST* relatively cheap logger is Evoscan. It is made for a variety of Mitsu cars, so you'll have to tweak a setting or two. I had to offset my timing by 10 degrees to get it read accurately.

As for the cable, are you plugging it into a serial port on an older laptop, or do you have a serial to USB adapter? There are different types of chipsets in the USB adapters (I forget what they're called), but only certain adapters work for logging 1g cars. The known working adapters are the Keyspan and Sewell adapters. Also, '90 DSMs have a grounding issue with some logging cables that have the "auto on" feature. To get around this, ground the wires that go to pins 10 and 12 together.

Sorry im new to logging. What dose COM1 thru COM4 mean?

Serial ports have assignments, COM1 and up. For example, the standard used to be address 3F8 and interupt 4 for COM1:
Interfacing The Serial / RS-232 Port
The old DOS COM ports usually stopped at COM4, but under the new Windows platforms you can have many more, and they don't have to conform to the standard interupts and addresses. If your laptop has a real 9-pin hardware serial port, just make sure that it is enabled in your BIOS and it is setup for either COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4. I prefer COM1 or COM2. Then, simply set the TMOLogger for the same port, and it should fire right up.

So I downloaded this program but i cant get it to connect. I have the serial port cable i tried all the COM's and i just couldn't get it to connect to the ECU. It says COM1 has a bad connection or lack of power, COM's 2 and 4 are in use or not connected and COM3 is connected to the ECU incorrectly. Has anyone else had this problem or dose anyone know how to fix this. Thanks for your help. Its killing me not being able to log...

So, the laptop you are using this on is an older one with a real hardware 9-pin serial port, right? Are you sure the serial port is turned on in your CMOS? Does the serial port show up in the "Ports" section if you go into the Control Panel; System? When you check the properties, what is the COM port, address and interupt it is using? What operating system are you running?
Most cables that you buy on eBay have a male 9-pin serial connector, for connecting to a PDA. Did the one you ordered come with a female connector? If not, how did you adapt it to fit your laptop?

I had no problems connecting using MMCD with a Palm IIIxe. I also used an ebay serial logging cable. Worked great!

If you're using a cable designed for a palm but are using it on a PC, you need a null modem cable.

I like tmolog for 1g's the best.

The TMO logger is a straight forward and easy as hell to use logger. Just install it, attach the cable, and fire it up. The downside is that you couldn't log WB02 (with the version I had anyway).

IMO, Evoscan is the "best" that you can get for a 1g. It's super cheap, VERY configurable, and can log the ECU and readouts from popular widebands without having to wire the wideband to the ECU.

The computer has a hardware 9 pin serial port, I don't know how to check and see if the port is on or not. The cable is a male and i bought a 2 sided female connector to get it to work. The computer has windows XP pro.

Again -- It as to be a null modem cable, not a straight through adapter. It is impossible to get it to work without a NULL MODEM CABLE.

Yes, he is right, that is probably your problem. The gender adapter doesn't swap pins 2 and 3 like a null modem does. You should either get the proper null modem adapter, or open the 9-pin cable connector up and see if you can swap the wires on pins 2 & 3 with each other.

As I said, in Windows XP you can go into Control Panel; System; Hardware; Device Manager, and see what ports are listed. If you see a hardware serial port listed, it will look something like "Communications Port (COM1). You can right-click on Properties, and check the resources, to make sure they conform to the proper RS-232 address and interupt.
If you DON'T see the port listed, it might not be enabled in your motherboard's CMOS/BIOS. On most computers you have to hit some key combination to get into the SETUP screen when you first boot. Look for a message to that effect when you boot it. On some computers its F1, on others it might be CTRL-S, or some other weird combination.

Thank you guys all for the help. I got the port turned on and got the adapter i needed. Now i just have to figure out how to get the logger started... The instructions aren't that clear in the program. go figure... One step closer.
