D2 coilovers?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Give us a review/opinion of the ride quality when you figured it out. By the looks of things (preliminary), it is not a good system aside from its looks.

I would like to see a side-to-side comparison with a Tein Basic or Flex system if ever somebody or a vendor can.

I'm confused on all this spring rate talk. so the higher the rate the stiffer the ride is? so the standard 11/9 on a 2g is like a medium/High and going to like a 13/11 is high? Also is there anything wrong with the stock rate that it comes with? I mean why are so many people changing it to a lower rate? Is it really that stiff?

Also do they come with Bump rubber stoppers? That is really the only difference i see between this kit and the TEIN Flex other than obviously the price and 36 way adjustability.

JUST A side note i hear with the nissan ser community they are d2's are doing well. they had some problems also i will try to post a link. speedfactor do you sell only d2' kits for eclipse only or for other cars too?

http://www.sr20forum.com/search.php?searchid=831551

first RULE if you are not sure about a particular suspension system look on other car forums.

Just keep the whole convo to PM's.

Keep the customer service and product availability talk out of the thread.

Any updates on this? Anyone with a 1g want to post a review, after putting them on the car?

can anyone tell me what in Kg would the spring rates be for a 300/400 lb/in setup. Im not sure how to do the converstion for the D2 springs.

Its not a conversion just for D2 springs, or springs in general. Its basically metric to standard.

Just multiply the kg by 56 and you will get your spring rates in in/lbs.

Well my buddy has had them for a bit now and he likes them alot. The height still isnt what they claim it is as far as how high they go, but it wil be good enough for anyone here that doesnt like to jump there DSM. The spriongs are a bit stiff with the stock rates, but not to aweful bad and the ride is pretty good.

They are the best bang for the buck IMO, but those who are hardcore into handeling wont like them, but they will also spend alot more to get there perfection. In all honesty if I could get them with a bit softer spring and valving to match I would buy them over my AGX/GC combo in a heartbeat.

As am i, anyone care to enlighten us suspension-knowledge-challenged individuals?

And i have absolutely no suspension experience, could i install these and a camber kit for them myself?

after searching alot, i came across this thread at DSMTalk that helped alot. link just remember, typically you want front stiffer then rear, the higher number means stiffer and to take wheel rate into consideration.

one thing i dont get yet is this. typically do we want stiffer fronts to compensate for the motion ratio being smaller then the rear? how much of a difference (if any) does FWD or AWD make? for example im thinking about gettin 9/7 (504/392) but after takin into account motion ratios its more like 5/5.5(291/317). being so close, but rear being slightly stiffer what does that mean for handling around corners? would 10/7 be better for handling or 9/8?

When you start thinking in terms of all-out handling, you want to switch to thinking in terms of weight transfer, instead of mere spring-rates. For road-racing (and other situations involving sustained sideways acceleration), the suggestion is to have the percents of weight transfer (front vs rear) be equal to the static weight distribution. So, if you have a 62/38 car in terms of weight, you want 62% of the weight transfer to occur up front.

Therefore, the answer to the question about spring-rates depends on the swaybars and several other details, such as the ride height and the sprung and unsprung weights.

Complications:

- As I suggested above, all of the standard advice seems to come from road-racing. If you want a car that handles better but is safe to loan to idiots, then you probably want to keep some of the understeer. Conversely, if the car's primary use is autocrossing, then you probably want to go across the line to some oversteer.

- Some cars behave in a strangely non-linear manner with regard to total roll stiffness. A 2G DSM appears to be one of them. What I mean by this is that it is not enough to just get the front and rear weight transfers right. The car needs a certain amount of total roll stiffness or the front tires just don't seem to work and no matter what you do to the weight transfers, it ploughs and then snap-spins. Assuming RM swaybars, the minimum springs that we need to get the fronts to their happy place is somewhere around 600 in the front with 400 in the rear. Or, if you are doing this in detail, you need around 30,000 total roll stiffness.

He has the upgraded coilovers?

I think I followed your thread on "talk."

so i just orded my d2's with just the standard spring rate. i havent seen a good review of these yet, would it be worth my time to do one? and maybe a install guide w/ pics?

I know its not a DSM specific thing that im posting right now but it might help to know the the D2s are great on other cars as well.

I currently have a 93 del sol SI
i wanted an autox capable suspension and ended up with the following items
D2 9k/9k custom
Skunk 2 camber arms
Progress 22mm rear sway
full energy suspension bushing kit.

Nevertheless, the d2 suspension is flawless IMO, the adjustments are great, its really not 32 way adjustable, but maybe 8-10 settings that you are able to tell the differnce in, on full soft it is extremelu bearable, and on full hard it sill is, but my car stas flat as a pancake(i attribute that to the rather large rear sway as well however)

But anyways, like i said, sorry its not a DSM specific insight in to the D2 coilovers, but i am more than happy with them and wuld reccomend them to anyone, especially over hte cheap ass omni power stuff (do they make these for DSMs?)

But for gods sake include some kind of instructions, label the springs so you know what stiffness they are, i ordered a pair of 11k springs and i cant tell the diff between the 9 and 11s, (11s for rear for more oversteer)

I recently purchased and installed a set of the new revised d2 coilovers for the 1g and for the most part, I have to reiterate the reviews already posted about them.

Installation was pretty much straightforward, except for having to figure out a way to moun the ABS sensor lines on the front of the car. Other than that, everything bolts in rather quickly.

My impressions have been fairly positive thus far with only a few hundred miles under them.

Please take into consideration my lack of technical knowledge regarding suspension components, taking my opinion as just that--from an uninformed poster.

The d2s are overly sprung for the street. If you already have an upgraded rear sway bar on your 1g, you may want to order slightly softer springs for the rear than what the standard spring rates are (posted somewhere else on this thread). There is absolutely no body roll with the dampeners on their softest settings. On average roads, the car is a bit bouncy. And if you're running on the street, I'd suggest softer springs with upgraded sway bars to control body roll to keep the car more firmly planted on not so great public roads. When the car's pushed hard, depending on the road conditions, the car will either grip or become jostled, which doesn't inspire confidence and can be downright scary at times. But the components do their job decently for the money.

The ride height adjustment for the fronts is insane. With the shock bodies fully extended, you could go rallying as it puts the car above ride height by a good 2-3inches.
The rear doesnt have as much adjustment. I got the car to within a 1/2 inch of stock ride height without messing with preload--something that's been repeated by others.

Right now, I have the car sitting at stock ride height. The car looks stock, but it rides on stiffer hardware, so the handling is much improved. This is basically what I wanted without having to buy custom springs and konis. Plus, I have the option of lowering the car if need be during track times.

My goal was to just improve the stock handling, leaving me the option of occasional but not serious road race time, while not having to go sideways over speed bumps. Getting used to the ride will take some time, but it's not unliveable.

Overall, I'd recommend these for the price from only my opinion, as I don't quite know much about OTHER suspension systems right now. I'm sure if you talked to other, more knowledgeable, individuals on this board, more flaws could and would be pointed out. But the d2s seems to be accomplishing what I've wanted out of them right now. Hopefully, i'll be able to grow with them, but like most of my mods, I'm sure I'll find out the hard way that I should have bought a more expensive setup. But that happens all the time, and I'm prepared for it.

Exactly. I dont think D2 even knows what springs they are putting on  . I've called and asked D2 north america why they dont mark it, and all they could tell me was that, "They know which springs are which".

Ok. :notgood:

FWIW: My Mueller JIC's did not come with instructions.

But if you really need instructions with prebuilt coilovers, well, uh. Yeah.

The ones I got came with a brochure, which was enough to figure out how to adjust everything.

And they do come preassembled.
