Cylinder head damage advice

I picked up a motor to mess around with not too long ago and use in my engine rebuilding class. I decided recently that if it's in decent shape, I'll rebuild it, buy a shell and get back into DSM's.

Anyways, I've been slowly tearing it down, cleaning everything, etc. And I took the cylinder head apart the other day and found some interesting things.

First: The engine definitely had debris in it. All the bearings showed it, and the crank is junk as well. I took off one of the Intake valves, and found this:

I'm pretty positive that's where the debris came from that was floating around in the oil. Another one was cracked really bad. Then I found this:

Sorry if it's hard to see, but the cast aluminum around the valve guide is all cracked. I'm gonna take it to my welding teacher's machine shop and see if he can salvage it/fix it. People who can give me good advice, what do you think of this?

the first pic, I would say that the head had arp studs at one time , and the washer clipped the spring pad

about the guide boss being cracked, I would bet that the guide was changed at some point, and it gauled when it was removed, and it craked the boss, if the valve is seating proper, I would not mess with it, not even to worry about the crack. just check around both ends of the guide to see if it goes all the way thu the boss from top to bottom,

Ok, I'll double check it and see if it's just the top that's cracked. Thanks for the info. You think this crack would open further if I replaced the guides?

The crack looks like it's only on the top. No sign of it on the intake port side.

the crack may open more.. I would be apt to just leave it alone.. you may do further harm... but if the guide is just loose as a goose. you have no option but to try

The guide isn't loose at all, but right around where it's cracked, the metal from the guide looks squished out the top of the guide boss a bit. None of the others are like that.

I found your article on how to remove the guides, so I may just try it and see what happens. I can always find another head if I have to. Just wanting to see if this one is useable. Thanks for the help BogusSVO.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. Sorry, it's only cellphone quality. Only way to get a decent close up of it. You can see the "squished/rolled out" metal around the base of where the guide meets the boss.

from the look of it, I would have to say the guide has be replaced before.... and it was drove out in the wrong direction.... as long as the clearance is right between the guide and the valve.. let it ride....

BTW the guide driver you will need is about $45 bux and you will need an air hammer

also the seats will have to be re-cut to the center line of the new guide, lapping a valve in will not work

Ok, I'll make sure the clearance is kosher, then just replace all the other guides.

And yeah I saw your article, so I'll be picking up the air hammer and driver after christmas. Thanks again!
