Custom turbo setup.

Basically finished my 3 year long build of the car. Some pic's now that I have the car finished up. FP HTA 3586 G4CS block, FP3 cams, Garret 24x12x4.5 core with custom end tanks. I did an auto conversion to the car, Kiggly wiring with a Hurst Promatic ratchet shifter.

Cut the front rad crossember off and side bulkheads and did a custom tubular rad bar, Put the turbo in the drivers front corner to reduce charge pipe length.
Basically everything on the car has been custom made by myself and good friend Glen. Glen did all the Tig welding on the car. I did most of the cutting/fitting and assembling of the parts.

Looks clean and well built. Just to play devil's advocate I have to wonder though, aren't you just moving the airflow lag from one end of the system to the other? If I'm thinking correctly the lag will move from the intake side to the exhaust side of things (exhaust length increased). With longer runners and sharp bends in the manifold won't the exhaust charge cool/slow a bit before it reaches the turbo and decrease the turbo's efficiency? Of course, it may not be enough to matter. Regardless of the answers I have to give you props for building a nice custom setup.
 
very nice work... I like the way the turbo is mounted leaving more room on the passenger side for piping and other things.
the onlyu warning i'll offer up is depending on how the rain is where you live and how much it sits in the road during and after the rain you might want to be very carefull or not drive it on rainy days.

I had my filter plumbed to where my stock SMIC was and one day hit a puddle (and was going VERY slow) but the car still sucked up enough water at idle speeds to hydrolock and bend a 1g rod

What I'm referencing in regards to less piping is the more common "top mount" style headers or a typical T3 style header where there is about 2 feet of hot side charge piping. A heap of work to move the turbo to this location in comparision to just building a typical header but I figured I'd give it a try.

Thanks. I rarely drive the car and It does not get driven in the rain, Don't worry I know all the concequences of hydrolocking an engine. I'm a tech by trade, I've replaced 10 hydrolocked engines under insurance claims this year alone and had about the same amount where the owners got lucky and I just had to suck/drain all the water out of the engines.
 
Sweet. I respect all your work and I love it. I wish I had the same ability, knowledge and resources... and time.... but one thing that could be an issue is that the turbo is secluded in an area where it looks like it will catch some serious heat soaking. ## gonna run it pretty hot...
 
I like the idea. You can access the transmission without having to fool with the turbo. Some like to drop their tranny while leaving the motor in. My top mount puts my turbo right over the clutch slave cylinder. This also looks to make things easier fabbing a twinscroll manifold. Ot took alot of time to rig things right to do my top mount so that the turbo wouild duck in under the goosneck.

Your header wrap is covering up your welds :sneaky:
 
dsmmack, would you be able to send me any pics of that manifold? possibly in the building stages. do your spark plugs all burn evenly with that manifold?

Explain how you feel the turbo's location is going to cause it to heat soak anymore than sitting in the stock location between the heat of the engine block and rad..

Its a stock 1g intake manifold with the plenum and about 2 or so inches of runners cut off. I had a thread on talk with the hacked manifold build up in it. Again all the pic's your likely looking for are also in the car build thread that I linked in the initial post ^^
