Crate Motor

Anybody ever had a 420a crate motor or heard reviews about them? I have seen them on Howell Automotive website.

They are DAMN expensive but I was curious about them.

Lol! I guess that can help. I'm just curious if they are worth it. Its an awful lot of money for one of those but I am guessing they are built to the hilt and strong. And yes, how much power do they have?

If it's worth it or not really depends on what you're looking to get out of it.

If you were to rebuild your engine it would almost be the same thing except you wouldn't have the upgraded internals like what's in the crate motor (from Howell). You could always do a rebuild on your engine and upgrade the internals for cheaper than a crate engine.

Also you could look for a 2.4l 420a and rebuild it. That would give you more power than the 2.0l. Or you could use a stroker kit from Howell (2.2l).

I don't know the power, maybe someone else can help us out?


In MY opinion I don't think they're worth it unless you have a lot of extra $$. I say just rebuild it yourself and do some upgrades in the process. In fact, for $4600 you could do a nice rebuild and maybe turbo it.

how much power it gives you depends on what compression ratio you get. if you get 10.5:1 then you will get about 4-5 whp. if you get 8.8:1 you will loose about 4-5 whp. but these arent bought to create power, but to allow you to create more power. these are more for forced induction applications.

Considering you can get them with a set of Crane 0018s, headwork, and higher CRs, they can be used if you want a tuff little all motor car, but I find that, when going all motor, it's always more respected to say you selected the components and built it yourself. I agree with you, though, Chris. Buying a crate motor is generally something for those people who just want to have to think about adding more fuel and air to the engine, not actually building the actual engine.

D'oh i was thinking of short blocks , i forgot crate motors can be long blocks too.

pff thats rubbish, building the engine is half the fun. plus if anything gets screwed up you know who to blame .

Thanks for the info. Who knows what I ever want . I just would like to build a quick car in the next year or so, but your right, $4600 bucks is alot of dough for a motor. If I got to that point I think maybe it would be easier and cheaper to just have the thing gone through and re-built.
