I'm changing my CPS which was miserable as hell with the timing belt still on. Anyway, when i was taking the crank pulley off, the chain wrench slipped and it rotated about 1/2 inch counter-clockwise. I checked the timing belt and it was still tight. Is this bad, or is it not enough to matter? I just need to know before i try to start it tomorrow and it's seized or split a rod because timings off.
 
If you still have the timing cover off, make sure everything is still lined up. If its all assembled, line up the camshaft gears and check to see of the crank pulley is lined up with the 'T' on the timing cover.
 
I dont understand how it could turn at all. Theres a keeper that seats in a groove on the crankshaft that prevents such a thing.. But if I were you I would just double check all timing marks to make sure everything is still in spec.. Here >>> Timing Belt VFAQ
 
Tried checking timing. I can't rotate anything. I'm giving it all i have, but it won't turn clockwise. Does this mean it's seized or is it always a pain to turn?

Maybe i should take out the spark plugs and take it out of gear. LOL

Im not sure I fully understand what youre saying happened but if youre concerned that accidently rotating the motor a mere half inch counter clockwise has possibly caused it to jump time I assure you youre ok. Take it out of gear and rotate it a full revolution and check the marks on the cams and timing cover as was suggested for piece of mind though.
 
I haven't dug this far into a dsm yet, but knowing what I do about this car, it's not hard to believe this would cause something to blow. Typically how much do you have to rotate a crank backwards before it'll cause significant damage? I know someone on here's learned the hard way.

What I'm understanding is the crank just turned back a little while loosening the bolts for the crank pulley, is that right? If so, that's perfectly alright, just don't be turning it over and over backwards.
 
Turning it by hand either way won't blow the engine. You just can't time the engine correctly at that point.What you have to do is rotate the engine the correct way to remove any slack in the timming components.Just crank the engine overuntil you get to TDC and all marks are lined up.Than you should be good to go.

That is correct. I was trying to remove the lower timing cover so I removed the pulleys. While removing them, the crank turned backwards (counterclockwise) a little. I figured it would be fine as long as it's not a full rotation or anything. I'm just asking around before this costs me more money than I want to spend.

Ok ok.. I thought you were saying at first that when you were trying to losen the big bolt, the sproket turned and the timing belt didnt. Meaning you would have jumpped time. But I understand now. As stated above, youre alright with turning the crank backwards slightly. Its not going to ruin anything. Just dont go turning it a whole bunch the wrong way.

If you want to double check that the timing is still lined up correctly, turn the crankshaft until all timing marks line up. Then rotate the whole assembly another full six (6) rotations. If they all are still good youre golden!
 
ok. I installed everything including the battery. Still won't start. I've got a battery light. No cel. No clicking or dead battery. Won't even try to start. I checked the alternator belt and it's fine. Fuses are fine. Everything looks fine but it's not firing. Starting to get pissed.

To be clear, the engine does not turn over, correct?
On the bright side, if that's the case, you won't have to go back to your CPS.
 
I'll take pictures as soon as i can. PieEyedPiper, I sit in the car, turn the key, and nothing. Just fuel pump. Nothing else. I have a charging system light, but all looks well. When you install the CPS, Is theres something that runs between the sensor area? The attached Picture appears to have part of the crank system running through it. My engine deffinitely doesn't have this part of the crank gear. Is this picture only for 95-97, or should mine look like this too?
