I am trying to get off my crankshaft pulley for timing/water pump/head gasket change and I'm confused. It appears that when I do finally get the pulley off the engine, it will slam into the body of the car. I cannot just yank the thing out through the wheel well, it looks like it will hit the inside of the engine bay.

There is about 2 inches between the pulley and the body. Is this okay or do I have to drop the engine more? Right now the front motor mount is loose and the passenger motor mount is completely off. I tried pushing down on the motor and it won't hunker down enough.

I read on 2gnt that I would have to take out a body mount or something?

Any help would be appreciated. This seemed a lot easier in the write-ups.

Did you remove the 4 smaller bolts, and leave the big center one in place?
If you don't the pulley might slide off the crank shaft preventing you from tugging it out.

Edit: Just saw you have a 420A, I have a 4G63 so I might be wrong on what I mentioned.

more then likely you need to lower the engine slightly like our turbo models, you will need to remove the engine mount on that side and with a jack lower it slightly so you have more clearance

You need to have your passenger engine mount removed, which you have already done. Then using your jack lower the engine as far as it will go. You will also need to remove your intake or the battery because when you try to lower the engine they will hit each other and prevent the enigine from droping down.

Someone on 2gnt said I will have to remove the front crossmember. That really seems like the only way. I have removed the battery and intake already.

I never removed the front crossmember when I did my timing. After removing my passenger mount I was able to lower the engine down to where the pully just barely cleared the frame. Is there anything else that you can see that could be binding or preventing the engine from lowering?

It's strange because I was using three different write-ups and none of them mentioned the crossmember.

I don't see anything the engine is held up on. I had my cousin push the top of the motor while I was checking the clearance of the crank pulley and the engine bobbed up and down without any indication of rubbing on anything. I did raise the engine really high to get the passenger motor mount off. Do you think my transmission moved somehow and that's what's keeping the engine raised?

Not that it matters but I have a '99 OZ just like you.

Earlier in the project I took out the front motor mount bolt and later put it back in (in an attempt to jack the engine up higher). I accidentally put the bolt through one of the holes in the bushing. The engine couldn't sit low enough. So I just took the bolt out completely and got the engine to sit on the front crossmember. Everything works well now.
