Alright guys, girls?

So I'm trying to prove a guy wrong that the COST from repairing this 2g after it snapped a timing belt is under $1000.ROFL

Am I right??

I was only going 10-15mph when it snapped! I don't know everything about cars but when I took the valve cover off only 4 of those little things under the cam lobes were loose!

This guy argues that timing components, head gasket and new built head is easily a G. :nono:
He also was worrying about the pistons being damaged :boring: which yeah I guess it's a possibility..but I still want to say this is under a 1k rebuild!:hmm:

I could be very wrong but from remembering reading previous forums and looking
in the classifieds I was pretty sure he can do it for under that G!

What do you guys think?! Is he got me here or just doesn't know how inexpensive the 2g parts can be??! I know he's got the labor skills so he can't get outta that one!:p

Please tell me I'm right!! For DSM's sake:hellyeah:

This is a bad question. Not one single person on this site can tell you that exactly without first seeing the head off the car. You are probably looking at least 8 new valves, probably more, new guides for those valves, guides installed , guides reamed, seats cut, new valves cut, cleaning, new valve seals, possibly new springs, and you might need to resurface the head depending on the condition. This right here you are looking at 300-500dollars pretty easily. Next you will need gaskets, timing belt, timing components, possibly water pump head bolts, possibly seals, new coolant, new oil. You are getting in the 400 plus range there for those parts. Now with 700to 800 in parts and machine work you are going to have to find someone to pull the head, install the new head and set the timing. If you are paying someone to do all of this than I would assume you are looking at 1200-2000 depending on where you take it. This is all assuming that none of the pistons are damaged, but it is not possible to know until you get the head off.

yeah it all depends on what you do i pulled the built head of one of my other cars for my laser witch had all 16 valves bent from broken timing belt. just had it cleaned new gaskets, valve seals (just because) , belt and tensioner all for under 500. that's best case scenario.

4G63 Cylinder Head Refresh Package | Jackson Auto Machine
~ $390

Replacement valves - $36+$52 = $88
OEM Style Replacement Valves

If we take it a step further by replacing the valve guides, add like another $200 for the guides and installation.

Headgasket - we'll go with a composite: FEL-PRO Part # 9627PT ~ $25

Head bolts - since these are torque to yield on a 7 bolt, add $21 for FEL-PRO Part # ES71177

Timing belt OEM - STM: OEM MITSUBISHI TIMING BELT | 90-99 DSM | MD326059
~$77

Tensioner OEM - STM: OEM MITSUBISHI TIMING BELT TENSIONER | 90-99 4G63 DSM
~$99

Idler and tensioner pulleys OEM - $33 + $44 = $77
STM: OEM DSM TENSIONER PULLEY | MD129355 | MD182537
STM: OEM DSM IDLER PULLEY | 4G63 | 90-99 DSM | EVO VIII-IX | MD156604

Total = $977
That's a conservative amount as it is since I didn't add shipping in there and everything is just about the bare minimum needed for a complete head rebuild with the assumption that all 16 valves bent and cracked all guides, no replacement pistons factored in. If you want to rebuild a built head to the same specs, it's going to cost a lot more.

If you do it right and replace valve seals, hot tank + machine work on head. Thrown in some arps instead of stock bolts, change cam seals, OEM timing components, water pump, gaskets etc. Young can easily hit $1000. Or go cheap reuse or use non OEM timing components, just replace bad valves, don't replace water pump etc.. You can get away for under $1000 but you will be doing it all over again much sooner.
