Just a quick question for you guys. I just installed a big 16g and Im having an awful time with a coolant leak, I have had to drain the car three times and still no luck. I was reading the forums and I came across a thread that said you really dont need the coolant lines hooked up unless you have a BB turbo. Can I just loop the lines and not hook them up to the turbo and save myself some aggravation?
 
The coolant lines are not required. Many journal-bearing turbos do not have coolant lines and they work just fine. If the center housing has a provision for coolant lines, this does not mean you have to use them.....the only exception to this would be a ball-bearing turbo. Ball bearing turbos require coolant to allow the turbo's center housing to cool slowly after the engine is shut down to prevent oil from burning and sticking to the tiny ball bearings.

As stated above, make sure you allow the turbo a minute or so to cool down before shutting the engine off.
 
Well I always turbo time my turbos, so the general consensus is that they are not necessary and will not hurt the turbo or the performance right? Thanks guys!
 
You don't need to block them on the turbo itself; simply leave the banjo bolts completely out.

On the engine you can either use a long piece of hose to join the two coolant lines together, or trim the rubber hoses short at each fitting and shove a short 3/8" bolt into each of the hoses, then tighten the clamps.

Or, the ideal way, get a n/t water pipe and thermostat housing (assuming you have a air cooled oil cooler). They have no provisions for the water lines and will never leak, where as blocking off / running lines could possibly fail. Not to mention make changing alternators a bi***!
 
I just did this a month ago and so far no problems. I welded the water pipe as i also eliminated the tb coolant lines. I drilled and tapped the thermostat housing then used allen head plugs and screwed them in flush with the housing.
