Well i should say collapsed lifters.

I have a brand new motor that I have only put 426 miles on. I change the oil at 40 miles just to clear and debris from break-in.

I took a trip about 50 miles there and 50 miles back with no issues, just an oil leak ever since i got the motor built.

After 420 miles i went from full on dipstick, to a half a quart low on the dipstick.

Then i did this oil change yesterday @ 420 miles and just happened to drop my oil pan to reseal it and actually stripped a bolt :ohdamn: and the oil pan the shop gave me had a stripped oil pan bolt hole  because when i put it back in I could see the threads were messed up and It would not go past 5ft pounds tourque.

Well, anyway my oil was drained and nothing looked strange at all, I even wiggled my rod caps up and down to see if they had bearing movement and they didnt move, They "did" have side to side thrust play which i was told is normal as long as its in spec.

Before the oil change, @ 419 miles i noticed a Tick at idle that USED to go away when my car warmed up, well it did not go away anymore??

So i thought the half a quart low on the dipstick would be the problem, but its not.

After the oil change I did, the tick was still there and goes up with rpms. It is a tick of some sort, not a rod knock. I have heard a rod knock and my car doesnt make a deep clunk, it makes a suttle tick that i actually mistaked for injector pulse.

My question is, even after my oil change, and the oil is completely full.....Why are my lifters making noise now? This was a brand new full bottom and top end build and it shouldnt make an noises like this.....

How can i check to make sure if its the lifters?? Thanks

Also I found all these small little shavings of metal and gold/copper in my oil filter which i assimilated to break-in debris, my turbo has no unreasonable shaft play, and my rods did not have any play...(I was not adventurous enough to take my caps off)

There wasnt any metal shavings in the actual oil i drained, or the pan when i pulled it, besides on flake of copper, probably causing my tick now.

Thanks for your help, this built motor is a pain in th ass.

The shop that built the motor did not have that done.....Lemme guess, after 420 miles on the motor, my lifters start collapsing because that f*in port they didnt take 5 minutes to do?? Or is it because I need 3g lifters?

Edit: My vacuum is usually -20 at all times, sometimes it will be around -17 though.

The port mod is only necessary if you had the head shaved, or resurfaced a few times. If the head hasn't been ground, then you will be getting stock oil to the lifters which is fine.

3G lifters are a good idea. Did you reuse your old lifters? Oil pressure is good?

To determine if its a lifter ticking, go to Autozone, Checkers, O'Reilly's, Kragen, etc. and purchase a cheap stethoscope. They are like $5 or $10. Its amazing the amount of noise you can hear and pinpoint location with a cheap stethoscope. You can put the stethoscope on the injectors, then the valve cover, alternator, etc. and you can actually hear where the tick is coming from. Most likely its a lifter. You know you can change the lifters without pulling the head and cams.

oil pressure at idle (600 rpms, ik its low) is around 12, at 2000rpms its about 35-38, 3000 rpms its at 50-52, and redline 90psi.

Thats with the Balance shafts removed, 10w30.

No i did not do any oil filter housing porting, its just low like that somehow.

Im about to pull the VC and just try to push the lifters down...

What should i feel when pushing a collapsed lifter down (with cam lobe up of course)

Also whats a lash adjustment?? Could that be needed on a new motor?

Also, the lifters are new from the shop that built it, the noise just started after my 100 mile drive to Ionia and back.

A slight ticking isn't too much to be worried about. These cars have lifter tick.

This is a video just after I had bled all mine and reinstalled them when replacing the cams.

If you have a lifter that is that loud, (or 1 of them ticking that loud like that) you may have a problem.

Thanks for the vid. Knochgoon, My lifter tick is exactly half as loud, enough to be heard when reved, and definately enough to be heard with the windows down up to about 3k then its gone.

I didnt think a brand new motor should tick. thats just me though.

Well, actually the shop that rebuilt it (seeing by how crappy the motor was put together) used some sort of used lifter

But why would it JUST show after 400 miles....if they were bad wouldnt it be since day one?

maybe then had pretreated with seafoam or something, it ran out and the noise returned.

When i worked at a local dealership I seen a lot of seafoam used to get cars off the lot. I think its a terribly dirty practice, leaving you with the headache of fixing it now.

If you can pinpoint its the lifters, the 3g would be a good option, they can be found fairly cheap, and they move much more oil.

The hole size difference is almost scary

well, if i pull them out and they look oem (i had a full oem rebuild) Then Im making them buy me new lifters, ive had nothing but problems with this motor, I can name off a list of 20 things wrong.

Thanks

knochgoon, this is about exactly how my brand new motor sounds. Everything inside is brand new, including the lifters. You said if the engine makes that much noise, there may be a problem; what problem? I've never had a brand new engine before, and this one is a 2.3L stroker with Comp 101400 cams, springs, retainers, and all. Do the new lifters just need to break in or something? Thanks in advance!
