Like the title says. My buddy (MoBoost) just put in a brand new motor right from the machine shop. We just got it to fire and the lifters are ticking super loud. We both know this will happen, but the question is how long should it do this? I just want to make sure that if it happens for 5 minutes and it is supposed to only go for around 2, then something is wrong. Also, are there any other noises we should check for while it is running? We got it to turn over and fire but we want to check these few things to make sure it lasts. Any help would be great.

Believe it or not, I know that using the "right kind of oil filter" can eliminate most lifter noise. If you can't get rid of it, then you can use a scope, and find out which one it is coming from. If you can locate which cylinder it is coming from, but can't find out which one it is, you can just replace all four. They are 12 dollars a piece at O'Reily's, and it is fairly easy to do this. Take off your valve cover, unbolt the cams, but be careful to do a little on each one at a time (same goes for torquing back down). Put the caps in the order you removed them in, and replace in the exact same order (this is crucial). The rocker arms just kind of fall out, or not much ooomph required to get them off of the hydrolic lifters. The lifters just slide out with ease. If you want to do some smart stuff, spend the money and get a set of the things the lifters sit on (I forgot the name :shhh: ) Also get some cam seals if they look old or about to go while you have the valve cover off. The most important thing I can stress about replacing is the valve cover gasket. Those things are really jacked up on the price they are actually worth, but you HAVE to replace them, oil leaks from the original ones really bad. I might as well coach on how to rebuild the whole head, but that is as far as I can go without taking the head off at least.

Drive it around for 30 minutes and I bet the lifter tick will go away. Sometimes it takes more than just a few minutes of idle warm-up time.

Pretty sure its not lifter tick, anyone have any other thoughts? The sound reminds me of a rattling balance shaft, except this motor has none. Anyone had any bad experiences with the stuby shaft that replaces the balance shaft? I'm just trying to narrow things down because I am at a complete loss.
