My 1995 Eclipse GS-T clutch pedal won't return anymore, I started having this problem but I would pump it a little and it'd go back to normal, but now it won't come back at all and also it won't let me shift into any gears now. I was just wondering what it could be and how it could be fixed. Thanks

Could be the tob failure or clutch system i would pull the transmission off and inspect everything.

^Really? You would pull the transmission with the symptoms described? The phrase "Quality over quantity" comes to mind...

OP, you have air in your clutch hydraulic system. You need to figure out why.

First, open the hood and check the fluid level on the clutch master. Is it low? (smaller white cap on the left, not the one with the red circles)

Now, climb under the car and locate the clutch slave cylinder. Are there any visible leaks where the line meets the slave, or is the boot wet?

Next, look on the driver side up under the pedal assembly where the clutch push rod and boot is. Is it wet?

If none of the above is found, trace the metal clutch line from the clutch master to the slave, and look for any leaks.

Post back with your results, and we can help you narrow down the problem.

Yeah, I'd bet his clutch slave is spent as well.

Mine just recently did this, I have a new master to put in since my inspections found a leaky shaft.

I'd definately wait on pulling the trans till you at least rule out those two simple things to check.

Also, if you replace either.... bleed the shit out of the line. When you think its good, bleed it one more time.

I had this problem about a month ago. I had to change out my slave cylinder. But since I waited so long it pretty much destroyed my clutch also. If you fight with the slave to long it might end up ruining the springs on the clutch. Sometimes its nice to get carried away to inspect stuff while its already down.

Ok I jacked it up to check the slave cylinder since I looked at the inside and had checked the fluid level yesterday. I double checked again to make sure but it was still full, it was dry inside and the slave boot was dry. There was some play in it and it wasn't pushing back at all down there. Also I followed the line and from what I can tell and saw there was no leaks.

oh also when it doesn't let me shift into gears it's just when the car is on. Not sure if that makes a difference now but thought I'd mention it.

I don't understand why the hell people keep telling him to pull the transmission?

#1 - The reason the car won't go into gear while it is running, is because the clutch won't disengage. As long as the input shaft on the trans is turning (clutch engaged), it will never go into gear.

#2 - The clutch won't disengage because your clutch hydraulic system is not working, most likely because there is air in it. If the clutch pedal goes to the floor, and won't return, it reinforces the fact that there is an issue with the hydraulic system (air in the system, bad slave, bad master, etc.)

#3 - There is air in your clutch hydraulic system due to a leak. Or because the clutch master was low, and was actuated without adequate fluid level (which would also be due to a leak) which introduced air into the system.

You need to find the leak. If you can't find a leak right now, bleed the system and check again. After you bleed the system though, the car should work fine, depending on where the problem actually lies. Bleed and flush the clutch system and report back with the results. Whatever you do, the last thing I'd recommend is puling the transmission out of the car at this point. How about troubleshooting a little bit first?

^That doesn't mean they aren't there? He even described having to pump the pedal for proper operation prior to the clutch system not working. I'd bet my life it is an air leak, and nothing he's said thus far suggests otherwise. And certainly, nothing he has said suggests he has an issue which would require pulling the transmission.

Can you suggest another cause for the clutch pedal to go to the floor and not return on its own? A cause that isn't related to the clutch hydraulic system?

Yeah I wouldn't pull the transmission myself because 1 I don't have the tools and 2 I wouldn't want to deal with that mess right now. I do believe it is a leak somewhere because like I said It happened before and I'd pump it to get the air out. I'll bleed the line but I won't be able to get it done today, I'll try and get it done this weekend and hopefully everything will go well and it'd be something easy and not too expensive. Thanks, i'll respond to this post after I bleed it out though.

oh and no odd noises and it's as soon as I turn the car on.

Above your clutch pedal theres a rubber boot on a rod pull the boot back and see if theres any fluid in it since you only looked for leaks under the car. Doesnt mean its not leaking on the inside. Good luck.
